Made Sukadana, fresh talent in Indonesian fine arts<\/p>\n

JAKARTA (JP): Large format canvasses filled with spontaneous
\nbrush strokes and energetic ensembles of lines currently occupy
\nthe National Museum's exhibition room in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
I Made Sukadana, a promising young painter, is exhibiting
\nmore than 20 works in a solo exhibition entitled Titi Ugal Agil
\nthat has enthralled local art experts and art lovers alike,
\nensuring a critical and commercial success.<\/p>\n
This phenomenon is interesting amid the current climate in the
\nfine art world, marked by uncontrolled prices and an elaborate
\ntrade network. Art collectors are aggressively chasing
\n\"newcomers\" and young talents whose works are highly artistic and
\ncommercially viable. Made is one of their targets. These
\ncollectors understand perfectly the present map of the Indonesian
\nart market.<\/p>\n
Made's works, according to many collectors, are 'digestible'
\nand easily understood by the market, yet Made's skills and
\ntalents are unquestionable.<\/p>\n
Made's achievements lie in his mastery of technique and his
\ntalented skill in organizing a myriad of fine art elements into
\none superb composition. He has an impressively capable of
\nmodifying and improvising lines and colors in each of his works.<\/p>\n
He always carefully calculates all of the materials used in
\nhis compositions, balancing subjects and background, as well as
\nshapes and colors.<\/p>\n
Made is clever in the well-ordered and appropriate arrangement
\nof his subjects. His brush strokes are thick and heavy,
\nespecially when he uses color and creates light lines in contour
\nobjects.<\/p>\n
On his canvasses, Made frequently creates spontaneous splashes
\nof oil, adopting the art of batik-making techniques. Combined
\nwith oil-trickle, splash, and scrape, the batik painting
\ntechnique has enriched Made's art works.<\/p>\n
In the process of artistic creations, Made mostly relies on
\nhis natural instinct to express his freedom of mind. He possesses
\nstrong intuition mixed with emotion and sometimes wild
\nimagination, reflected in his dynamic language of pictures and
\nsymbols.<\/p>\n
Almost all of his works depict idiosyncratic and frightening
\nscenes, often inspired by Hindu Bali's philosophy and mythology.
\nThe Balinese metaphors, symbols and drawings are manifested in
\nBarong (mythical dragon-like creature) shapes.<\/p>\n
Made also adopts themes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata
\nepics, such as Arjuna Wiwaha, Ramayana, Srikandi Tanding, Karna
\nTanding and many others.<\/p>\n
Made is very familiar with these themes and eloquently
\nexpresses them in many of his artworks. In works titled Jatayu
\nRahwana, or Kebenaran dalam Bara Api (The Truth in Blaze), Made
\nportrays a scene in which Sinta, Rama's wife in the Ramayana, is
\nburned. In both works, Made employs vigorous scraping techniques,
\ncreating incredibly powerful pictures.<\/p>\n
In Karno Tanding, The Fight of Karno, he concentrates on
\ndetail, a reminder of traditional Balinese paintings which are
\nusually occupied with numerous figures and backgrounds. The way
\nhe represents the detail tends to be so decorative.<\/p>\n
He is fond of dark and heavy colors, creating magical and
\nmysterious atmospheres as manifestations of the Balinese
\ncosmological concepts -- microcosm and macrocosm.<\/p>\n
One of his most interesting works is Titi Ugal Agil, which was
\nselected as the title of his current exhibition. Here, Made is
\ninspired by the Kamasan painting style, on the ceiling of
\nKertagosa ( Hall of Justice) in Klungkung Royal Palace, East
\nBali.<\/p>\n
The painting symbolically illustrates the fate of humankind,
\nwhich is determined only by a narrow bridge standing on the edge
\nrazors.<\/p>\n
The painting has received wide criticism and is the artist's
\nmost contemplative work. Through this painting, Made is trying to
\nreexplore Balinese people's beliefs concerning myths and
\nreligion. The people believe that a bridge can take a person to a
\ndignified life, providing that he or she walks across it
\ncautiously and is able to overcome all distractions.<\/p>\n
Another of Made's works, Karno Tanding, measures an
\nastonishing 2 meters x 5 meters.<\/p>\n
For this young artist, it is important not to excessively
\nexploit the same colors, techniques and styles, in order to avoid
\ncreating monotonous works. With his talent and skill, it is
\nexpected that he will be able to create even greater and more
\nmature works in the future.<\/p>\n
The current exhibition run through until April 25.<\/p>\n
