        "content": "<p>A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of M6.2 shook North Halmahera,\nNorth Maluku, on Monday (14\/9). Strong tremors were reported on Morotai\nIsland, but there is no potential for a tsunami.<\/p>\n<p>The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported\nthat the earthquake occurred at 17:58 WIB. The epicentre of the\nearthquake was located at the surface in the northeast region of Doi\nIsland, North Halmahera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBMKG\u2019s analysis shows that this earthquake has an updated parameter\nwith a magnitude of M5.9 at a depth of 147 km. The earthquake\u2019s\nepicentre is located at coordinates 2.52\u00b0 N; 128.17\u00b0 E, specifically 50\nkm northeast of Doi Island, North Maluku,\u201d said the Director of\nEarthquakes and Tsunamis at BMKG, Wijayanto, in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTsunami modelling results indicate that this earthquake does not\nhave the potential to cause a tsunami,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that considering the location of the epicentre and the\ndepth of the hypocentre, the earthquake was a medium-sized event caused\nby deformation activity within the Maluku Sea Plate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe results of the source mechanism analysis show that the\nearthquake has an upward movement mechanism,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, he explained that the earthquake was felt with the\nfollowing intensity scales: \u201cIV MMI (felt by many people in houses\nduring the day) in South West Morotai, Morotai Island; Morotai Jaya,\nMorotai Island; North Loloda, North Halmahera; Daruba; and Tobelo\nCity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIII MMI (vibrations felt clearly inside houses, as if a truck were\npassing) in Jailolo and Ternate,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>So far, Wijayanto stated that there have been no reports of\naftershocks. \u201cBMKG will continue to monitor aftershock activity and\nprovide updated information to stakeholders and the public,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>",
