Lunar eclipse in E. Timor<\/p>\n
DILI, East Timor: Locals beat on electricity poles and created
\ndeafening noise to greet the lunar eclipse that appeared over
\nEast Timor on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The noise, which started at 9 p.m. local time, could be heard
\nin the regions of Becora, Kuluhun, Bemori, Audian, Vilaverde,
\nBairopite, Fatumetan and Surikmas.<\/p>\n
Local cultural observer Eugenio C.J. Sarmento explained to
\nAntara that the locals still believed eclipses foretold major
\ndisasters, which was why they scrambled to perform some cultural
\nrites, burn candles or give offerings.<\/p>\n
As for beating on the poles, "it was just to inform neighbors
\nof the 'strange' natural phenomenon," he said.<\/p>\n
Another expert, Fransisco do Nascimento, said the locals
\nchanted "ami se iha" or "we are still here" while looking up at
\nthe eclipse. He said the East Timorese were telling God that they
