Luhut plans to focus on foreign investment<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (Bloomberg): Indonesia's newly appointed trade and
\nindustry minister, Luhut Panjaitan, said he plans to focus on
\nattracting foreign investors by offering them incentives and
\neasier access.<\/p>\n
Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid yesterday fired Trade
\nand Industry Minister Yusuf Kalla and appointed Luhut, currently
\nIndonesia's ambassador to Singapore, to replace him.<\/p>\n
\"One thing I assure and promise is to make it easier and give
\nmore incentives to foreign investors to do business in Indonesia
\n-- that's my top objective,\" Luhut said in a telephone interview.
\n\"With my experience as the ambassador here for eight months, I
\nunderstand very well the expectations and concerns of foreign
\ninvestors.\"<\/p>\n
The appointment comes after Indonesia's economic ministers
\ncame under increasing criticism for carrying out economic reforms
\ntoo slowly. Indonesia is the only crisis-hit Asian country where
\nforeign direct investment has fallen in the past two years.<\/p>\n
Luhut promised \"easy government access\" for foreign investors.<\/p>\n
\"If they have any problem in dealing with the government in
\nterms of regulations, they can contact me any time and I'll try
\nto sort out the problem immediately,\" he said.<\/p>",
