Low-cost carriers<\/p>\n
The initiative by the Indonesian government to close major
\nairports to foreign low-cost carriers is totally wrong. It's
\nactually the existence of competition that will ultimately lead
\nto improvements in terms of the safety, cost, efficiency and
\nquality of Indonesian airlines, and a better deal for consumers
\nall round.<\/p>\n
With the government's move, the ailing Indonesian airline
\nindustry, characterized by old, high cost aircraft (which are
\nsubject to constant technical delays and ultimately endanger
\npeople's lives), old-fashioned management and in some cases
\ncollusion with the regulators to sweep deficiencies under the
\ncarpet, will be protected and allowed to continue in its current
\ndeplorable state.<\/p>\n
If the government wants to help Indonesian airlines to
\nimprove, it should pressure them about the age of their fleets,
\nenforce maintenance regulations and let only those that have a
\nsound financial basis continue to operate. So, it's truly amazing
\nthat the House of Representatives has come up with a
\nprotectionist move that will render local carriers complacent
\nrather than forcing them to \"shape up or ship out\". Nobody can
\nafford monopolistic structures in a world of competition.<\/p>\n
