I was sad to hear the news that one of the main causes of the
\nflood in the Cilacap area, in Central Java, was illegal logging
\nby irresponsible locals (TPI broadcast, Nov. 4, 2000). The flood
\nhas forced people to set up tents or flee to other areas thought
\nto be safe. The flood was also reported to have claimed two
\nlives.<\/p>\n
This is an issue that people should be concerned about and
\nthey should be aware of the pivotal role of the environment.
\nUnlike Sumatra and Kalimantan, Java is the most densely populated
\nisland in our republic. Therefore, education on environmental
\nmatters should be implemented.<\/p>\n
Students must be taught and warned about the dangerous
\nconsequences that might come if they are indifferent about their
\nenvironment. Even their lives are threatened. I herewith call on
\nthe authorities to include environment issues in the school
\ncurriculum as voiced by Rose and J. Nicholl (1997): \"Our aim is
\nto change the culture, to persuade people that they should care
\nabout their personal learning in the same way that they are all
\ngradually learning to care about the environment and our own
\nhealth\".<\/p>\n
So, love your nature or you might be carried away by it.<\/p>\n
