        "content": "<p>Lost sympathy for GAM<\/p>\n<p>From Kontan<\/p>\n<p>I was still a university student when the New Order regime <br>\ncollapsed. I was then \"against\" the government and believed that <br>\nthe uprisings in the regions, including the ongoing on in Aceh by <br>\nthe Free Aceh Movement (GAM) reflected a rejection of the then <br>\ngovernment as a result of the government's unfair treatment of <br>\nthe regions.<\/p>\n<p>At first I sympathized with GAM, especially because the <br>\nsecurity agencies committed violence in Aceh when this province <br>\nwas still a military operation region.<\/p>\n<p>However, I began to lose my sympathy for GAM when Ersa <br>\nSiregar, an RCTI journalist, was killed in Aceh. I have lost more <br>\nsympathy for this movement following government military claims <br>\nthat after the tsunami disaster, GAM allegedly attempted to seize <br>\nrelief aid intended for the tsunami victims. I wonder whether GAM <br>\nmembers are really Acehnese?<\/p>\n<p>I hope the Indonesian government can quickly settle this Aceh <br>\nquestion so peace will again return to Aceh, a province better <br>\nknown as the Veranda of Mecca.<\/p>\n<p>SHOLEH MUBHAKTI<\/p>\n<p>Jakarta<\/p>",
