Long-serving badminton coach resigns after 13 years<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Badminton Association of Indonesia
\nofficially accepted the resignation of men's singles coach Indra
\nGunawan after a meeting on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The association's executive director Agus Wirahadikusumah said
\nafter the meeting that Indra would no longer coach at the
\nNational Badminton Center in Cipayung, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Agus said Indra's resignation was not unusual because he had
\nbeen coaching at the center for 13 years.<\/p>\n
"Perhaps he has other plans, but he never mentioned anything
\nto us," he said.<\/p>\n
Indra joined the center 13 years ago and has guided the Thomas
\nCup squad through seven competitions, three of which resulted in
\nIndonesian victories.<\/p>\n
He did not appear at the center after returning from the
\nsuccessful Thomas Cup campaign in Hong Kong in May.<\/p>\n
Antara reported that Indra instead traveled to Surakarta,
\nCentral Java, and Surabaya in East Java for family reasons.<\/p>\n
Agus said the association had never been too dependent on any
\none coach. "The most important thing for us is to boost the
\ndevelopment of players and coaches. We must also hire coaches who
\ncan get along with the players."<\/p>\n
"The association would not object if Indra decided to coach
\nabroad. That would be good because it would help Indonesia
\ndevelop good ties with other badminton playing nations," he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
Indra declined to say why he had resigned. "I'll tell you some
\ntime, but it's not about salary."<\/p>\n
Newspapers reported that Indra resigned in protest at his low
\nsalary. He was paid less than physical trainer Paulus Passurney.<\/p>\n
Mulyo Handoyo and Agus Dwi Santoso will take over immediately
\nfrom Indra, and Joko Suprianto and Alan Budikusuma are being
\ngroomed as coaches of the future.<\/p>\n
Agus said men's doubles coach Atik Jauhari, who recently
\nrequested two months leave, would be offered a position on the
