        "content": "<p>Logging permits abused<\/p>\n<p>PADANG, West Sumatra: The head of the Ministry of Forestry's<br>\nprovincial office, Mannas, said the easy administrative<br>\nprocedures to obtain logging concessions have often been abused.<\/p>\n<p>He said many investors use permits acquired from provincial<br>\nlevel government officials to begin operations.<\/p>\n<p>\"A lot of concessionaires, equipped only with recommendations<br>\nfrom the governor or a regent, have started massive logging<br>\noperations,\" he told The Jakarta Post yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The abuse of the system is often discovered only after the<br>\nconcessionaires have been caught in police crackdowns on illegal<br>\nlogging, he said.<\/p>\n<p>If unchecked, he warned, this practice could lead to<br>\nuncontrolled logging and natural disasters such as flooding and<br>\nlandslides.<\/p>\n<p>\"It takes a lot of consideration before a logging permit can<br>\nbe issued, such as the concessionaire's commitment to<br>\nregreening,\" he said.
