        "content": "<p>Local text books give wrong information on South Korea<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): South Korea is often wrongly perceived in<br>\nIndonesia because many books on literature, including school<br>\nbooks, have factual mistakes, South Korea's Deputy Ambassador to<br>\nIndonesia Hangjohng Yo said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The mistakes occurred usually because authors used old books<br>\nas reference, Yo said.<\/p>\n<p>Most geography books in Indonesian schools, for example, still<br>\ndescribe the Korea Strait as Japan Sea, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\"The name was used during the Japanese occupation (in<br>\nIndonesia), but now things have changed, so has the name of the<br>\nwaters,\" he said after a press conference to announce an essay<br>\ncompetition on South Korea for high school and university<br>\nstudents.<\/p>\n<p>The contest, jointly organized by the South Korean Embassy and<br>\nthe Ministry of Education and Culture, aims at correcting these<br>\nmisperceptions, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Essays are to be written in Indonesian and based on either<br>\n\"the Difference between what I know of South Korea from schools<br>\nand from other sources\" or \"How to obtain accurate information on<br>\nSouth Korea\".<\/p>\n<p>A study conducted by the director of Center for Korean Studies<br>\nat Nasional University Jakarta, Park Jin Ryeo, discovered that<br>\nmany inaccurate descriptions on South Korea were found in text<br>\nbooks on geography and social sciences, Yo said.<\/p>\n<p>Any essays suggesting how to obtain accurate information as<br>\nwell as citing examples of incorrect descriptions of Korea found<br>\nin Indonesian literature would receive extra points.<\/p>\n<p>Muchlis Dasuki, the head of international cooperation at the<br>\nMinistry of Education and Culture admitted the flaws.<\/p>\n<p>The government endorsed the essay contest as it encouraged<br>\nyoung Indonesians to get a more accurate picture of South Korea,<br>\nhe said.<\/p>\n<p>Ten winners from each of the two categories -- high school and<br>\nuniversity students -- will be invited to visit South Korea for<br>\none week and receive cash prizes ranging from Rp 300,000 to Rp 1<br>\nmillion.<\/p>\n<p>All entries for the contest must reach the organizers by Aug.<br>\n15.
