Local shipyard gets orders from foreign firms<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): State-owned PT Dok & Perkapalan Kodja Bahari
\nannounced yesterday that it has won orders for the construction
\nof ships from Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands and Iran.<\/p>\n
Asharsono, a director of the company, which is a merger of
\nfour shipbuilding companies, said that in the last four years
\nsince the merger, Germany has ordered five liquefied natural gas
\ntankers; Sweden, one roll-on, roll-out vessel and one tanker; the
\nNetherlands, four 550-cubic feet reefer vessels and Iran, one
\ntugboat and five split barges.<\/p>\n
Local companies have also ordered tankers and passenger ships
\nfrom the company, he said.<\/p>\n
\"The contracts for all of them have already been signed,\"
\nAsharsono said after attending a ceremony for the installation of
\nthe company's new directors.<\/p>\n
He declined, however, to mention the prices of the ships,
\nsaying that he feared it would be harmful to the clients \"who are
\nalways competing with other shipping companies\".<\/p>\n
All the orders are expected to be completed by next year, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"There is a good market out there and I am convinced that we
\ncan beat the competition,\" Asharsono said, citing Chinese
\nshipbuilders as the company's main foreign competitors.<\/p>\n
He stressed that low prices were not the only determining
\nfactor.<\/p>\n
\"All ships have a 'class certificate' which guarantees the
\ndegree of their quality and reliability. Prices, on the other
\nhand, are quite negotiable,\" Asharsono said.<\/p>\n
Directors<\/p>\n
The directors of Dok & Perkapalan Kodja Bahari, who were
\ninstalled yesterday, were Akmal Wahid, who was appointed as the
\ncompany's president, and H.I.M. Pratisto, Wing Wirjawan, Muchlis
\nHamid and Asharsono as directors.<\/p>\n
Dok & Perkapalan Kodja Bahari was established in 1991 after
\nthe government decided to merge PT Dok & Perkapalan Tanjung
\nPriok, PT Kodja and PT Pelita Bahari in a bid to increase the
\ncompanies' efficiency and productivity.<\/p>\n
In 1992, PT Dok & Galangan Kapal Nusantara joined in the
\nconsolidation.<\/p>\n
R. Pramono, the inspector-general of the Ministry of Industry
\nwho addressed the ceremony said that the merging of the four
\ncompanies did not cause any \"extraordinary rifts\".<\/p>\n
\"In fact, many things have been achieved by Dok & Perkapalan
\nKodja Bahari,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Orders for ships, he cited, have gradually increased the
\ncompany's capacity to improve production processes, human
\nresources and capital structure.<\/p>\n
Last year, the company made Rp 171.15 billion (US$77 million)
\nin sales revenues and Rp 3.19 billion in before-tax profits.(pwn)<\/p>",
