Local salt has lost saltiness<\/p>\n
Indonesia is often called an archipelago or a maritime
\ncountry. Unfortunately, it is yet to be self-sufficient in salt.<\/p>\n
This country sustains a significant deficit of salt. It can
\nonly supply 1.21 million tons of salt or 46.5 percent of the
\ntotal demand of 2.6 million tons of salt nationwide.<\/p>\n
To cover this short supply, salt is imported from Australia
\nand India.<\/p>\n
With due respect to those devoting themselves to the
\nproduction of salt, it is quite proper, at this stage, to
\nquestion whether this inability to meet the national demand for
\nsalt is a blessing or a disaster. Salt-making is not difficult,
\nit has been practiced from one generation to another.<\/p>\n
Our inability to be self-sufficient in salt is strong evidence
\nthat we, as a nation, often trifle with daily problems. Haven't
\nwe also failed to be self-supplying in other vital commodities
\nsuch as rice, sugar, soybeans, corn and many others staple foods,
\nnot to say high technology products.<\/p>\n
In this context, the government in the reform era should
\nreally focus its attention to how this nation can be self-
\nsufficient in basic commodities.<\/p>\n
Among other things, the government should assign all
\ngovernment agencies and technically relevant institutions to go
\nall out in making the program of self-sufficiency in daily
\nnecessities a success. Then, the government may proceed with
\nareas where the mastery of higher technology will be needed.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, it is often reported that cooperation between
\ngovernment agencies is very weak. Not infrequently do these
\nagencies involve themselves in counterproductive actions such as
\ntrying to cause rival agencies to fail. Securing projects means
\nmore pocket money for virtually everyone in the government
\nagencies concerned.<\/p>\n
