Local players get light bans for fight<\/p>\n

Following a four-year ban slapped on Jorge Toledo of Persita
\nTangerang, the Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) announced
\nsuspensions for three other players here on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Goalkeeper Samsidar, midfielder Ismed Sofyan, both of Persija
\nJakarta and Persita's goalkeeper Ahmad Kurniawan were handed a
\nfour-month ban for their involvement in the clash during the
\nPersija-Persita match at the Bung Karno stadium here on Sunday.<\/p>\n
PSSI's disciplinary commission also announced that the three
\nplayers were fined Rp 10 million (approximately US$1,180) each.<\/p>\n
The Chilean Toledo, who was deemed to have initiated the
\nbrawl, was also fined for his unruly conduct on Monday. The
\npunishment included a Rp 20 million fine.<\/p>\n
Monday's reports said Toledo ran across the field and
\ndeliberately assaulted Ismed.<\/p>\n
The commission also banned Freddy, who is a translator for
\nPersija's coach Carlos Maria Garcia Cambon of Argentina, from any
\nactivities in Indonesian soccer for four years as "he was
\nreported to have been actively involved in the clash".<\/p>\n
Commission head Togar Manahan Nero told reporters in a press
\nconference after the meeting that the rulings were based on
\nreports as well as video footage from three TV stations.<\/p>\n
Representatives from both sides were also summoned to provide
\nclarifications about the clash.<\/p>\n
According to TV footage, Samsidar and Ismed retaliated by
\nassaulting Persita's players, including Toledo, while Kurniawan
\nwas seen brawling with Persija's Budi Sudarsono.<\/p>\n
However, the commission said it was not convinced as yet about
\nBudi's involvement and has planned to summon Budi for a hearing
\non Monday.<\/p>\n
Monday's hearing will also see more video footage from a
\ndifferent TV station, said Togar.<\/p>\n
Commenting on the significant difference in punishment between
\nthe three local players and the foreign-born Toledo, the
\ncommission's deputy head Edison Betahubun would only say it was
\nbecause the Chilean had apparently initiated the incident.<\/p>\n
Edison admitted that it was also because Toledo had failed "to
\nbecome a good model" for his domestic counterparts, which worked
\nagainst the Chilean.<\/p>\n
"To see a foreign player setting a bad example is really
\ndisappointing and such a player deserves harsher punishment,
\nwhile for the locals, we consider the suspension as an educative
\ndisciplinary act," he explained.<\/p>\n
Due to the suspension, Samsidar and Ismed will be excluded
\nfrom the national team's trip to Saudi Arabia on Feb. 18 for the
\nAsian zone qualifying matches for the 2006 World Cup qualifying
\nmatches.<\/p>\n
Earlier, the national team coach Ivan Venkov Kolev revealed
\nthat he had yet to call up the players for the matches, saying
\nthat he would still need to monitor the players performances in
\nfive more matches of the Indonesian soccer league.<\/p>\n
The chosen matches are Deltras Sidoarjo vs Persebaya Surabaya,
\nPersita vs Persikota Tangerang, Persita vs PSPS Pekanbaru,
\nPersija vs PSM Makassar and Persela Lamongan vs Persik Kediri.<\/p>\n
The squad is scheduled to have a training camp in Jakarta from
\nFeb. 1 to 9 and an overseas try-out on Feb. 10 to 12.<\/p>\n
The tentative opponents are United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and
\nJordan. Kolev will be assisted by his fellow Bulgarian Atanas
\nGiorgiev.<\/p>",
