Local nurses called on to increase level of care<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Nurses should improve the quality of their care
\nand become more professional in their daily service, a senior
\nnurse said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Ratna Sitorus Sudarsono, a teacher at the University of
\nIndonesia's school of nursing, said that there were far too many
\ninstances of patients becoming victims from the carelessness of
\nnurses.<\/p>\n
\"Our nurses are not properly trained in their education to
\nrender professional care,\" she lamented.<\/p>\n
\"Current nursing schools only teach concepts (of professional
\nnursing) to nurses, but the application is hardly seen in
\npractice,\" she told The Jakarta Post after speaking at a seminar
\non medical care management here yesterday.<\/p>\n
She said proper training could help improve nurses'
\nprofessional attitudes and help them to discern their patients'
\nbasic needs.<\/p>\n
Ratna explained that if nurses wished to establish a high
\nstandard of professionalism in their work, they needed to become
\nmore active in determining the type of care that patients
\nrequire.<\/p>\n
She said nurses now are far too passive, acting only when
\nordered by senior medical personnel.<\/p>\n
Ratna noted that nurses were not expected to render major
\nmedical treatment to patients but they should be able to make
\nsimple diagnoses.<\/p>\n
Simple diagnoses by nurses, she said, must fulfill the often
\nneglected basic needs of patients which includes the need to
\ncommunicate with other people and even the need for a change of
\nclothing.<\/p>\n
Ratna, who also chairs the management board at The Indonesian
\nFlorence Nightingale Foundation, underlined that nurses should be
\nmore caring when providing service.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Florence Nightingale Foundation was created to
\nestablish cooperation between Indonesian and English healthcare
\nprofessionals.<\/p>\n
It was founded on Sept. 9 this year to promote the training
\nand education of nurses. (09)<\/p>",
