        "content": "<p>Local language campaigns for billboards go on<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The crackdown on billboards and other signs<br>\nusing foreign words will continue next week after being suspended<br>\nfor several days during the official celebration of the 50th<br>\nanniversary of Indonesia's independence.<\/p>\n<p>Harry Soetjipto, chief officer of the City Office for Public<br>\nOrder, said yesterday that the operation would be conducted on<br>\nmain streets in the areas that have been left untouched during<br>\npast operations; from the Blok M area in South Jakarta to Pasar<br>\nIkan in North Jakarta. The operation will also be carried out in<br>\nother parts of the city, including Jl. Pramuka, Jl. Diponegoro<br>\nand Jl. Cawang.<\/p>\n<p>The city administration deployed 213 officers on Aug.1 to<br>\ncover up city billboards and other signs using foreign words.<\/p>\n<p>As of Aug. 10, at least 909 foreign-language billboards,<br>\ncompany plaques and other signs had been covered with white cloth<br>\nby the officers.<\/p>\n<p>Harry said that, as of yesterday, none of the owners of the<br>\noffending signs had been punished in relation to their<br>\ntransgressions.<\/p>\n<p>\"Those whose displays have been covered with white cloth have<br>\nthree more days to change the foreign names or words,\" Harry<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>He said that 593 nameplates and billboards had been registered<br>\nas using foreign words, of which 109 have already been removed by<br>\ntheir owners, 82 have been changed to the Indonesian language and<br>\na further 61 remain covered with cloth.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the city administration's warning to the businessmen<br>\nnot to use the names of national heroes for commercial purposes,<br>\nincluding as company names, Harry said he was still waiting for<br>\nfurther instructions from the governor.<\/p>\n<p>\"However, we will explain this matter to the businessmen<br>\ntomorrow,\" Harry said.<\/p>\n<p>Head of the City Security and Order Office Priyono was quoted<br>\nas saying that the city administration would soon launch an<br>\noperation to remove company signs and billboards throughout the<br>\ncity bearing the names of national heroes.<\/p>\n<p>He said his office was currently collecting data on companies<br>\nusing the names of national heroes, including Gajah Mada Plaza,<br>\nGajah Mada Motor, Bakmi Gajah Mada, Pusat Perbelanjaan Jayakarta,<br>\nWisma Hayam Wuruk and Hotel Gajah Mada.
