Local IT-based firms secure partnerships<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Some local telecoms and IT-based companies have
\nsecured strategic alliances with their foreign counterparts
\nduring the Indonesian International Telecommunications, Media &
\nInformation Technology (IITELMIT) 2000 show, which ended on
\nSaturday.<\/p>\n
Among the companies that used the event to sign their new
\nbusiness deals is PT CyberCity Indonesia, a subsidiary of
\nSingapore-based L&M Group Investments Ltd, which signed an
\nagreement with the U.S.-based telecoms infrastructure provider
\nLucent Technologies on Thursday.<\/p>\n
CyberCity Indonesia's president Edward Soerjadjaja said that
\nunder the agreement, Lucent would design, construct and operate a
\ntelecommunications network for his company's property project
\ncalled CyberCity in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
He said CyberCity was not an ordinary residence and business
\nestate since it would be fully equipped with infrastructures for
\nboth voice and data communications through fixed and wireless
\ntelephone and Internet.<\/p>\n
"At the first stage, we will develop web portals and a
\nmultimedia academy on a 10 hectare plot," Edward said, adding
\nthat the company had allocated at least US$50 million as initial
\ninvestment.<\/p>\n
The holding company of several Internet-based firms, PT Tele
\nNusa Dunia (TND), has also made use of the IITELMIT event to
\nadvertise its new deals with foreign partners, the Netherlands-
\nbased Hollandse Telecommunicatie Maatschappij (HTM) and
\nAustralian OnQ, to form two separate joint ventures.<\/p>\n
TND's director Willem Ouwens said the two newly founded joint
\nventures are PT HTM Indonesia and PT ONQ Indonesia.<\/p>\n
PT HTM Indonesia, which is equally owned by TND and HTM will
\nprovide network installation services.<\/p>\n
Ouwens said that among the potential clients HTM Indonesia
\nexpected to target were PT Telkom's KSO partners, mobile phone
\noperators and other telecoms and IT-based companies.<\/p>\n
"Telecoms operators are already running out of lines, they
\nneed to expand their capacities," he said.<\/p>\n
The other new joint venture, OnQ Indonesia, is 40 percent
\nowned by TND and 60 percent by OnQ, Ouwens said.<\/p>\n
He said OnQ Indonesia would mainly provide telecommunication
\napplications for the banking industry and cellular
\ncommunications.<\/p>\n
As part of the two new joint ventures, TND already has major
\nownership of about five Internet-based firms, including portal
\noperator PT Portal Integrasi Indonesia and application developer
\nPT SmartWeb Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Another company that announced its business alliance at
\nIITELMIT was giant computer manufacturer Compaq.<\/p>\n
Compaq struck a deal with state-owned listed telecoms company
\nPT Telkom for the establishment of an Internet development
\nproject called Electronic Mega Mall.<\/p>\n
It said the project was developed by Telkom's multimedia
\ndivision by utilizing Compaq's server infrastructures.<\/p>\n
Compaq said the Electronic Mega Mall project was designed to
\nsupport the development of e-commerce portal Plasa.com as well as
\nTelkom's latest Internet service provider TELKOMnet Instant.<\/p>\n
Additionally, mobile telephone operator Satelindo announced
\nits alliance with computer applications provider SAP Asia to
\ndevelop an e-business platform for the company's business
