        "content": "<p>Local IT-based firms secure partnerships<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Some local telecoms and IT-based companies have<br>\nsecured strategic alliances with their foreign counterparts<br>\nduring the Indonesian International Telecommunications, Media &amp;<br>\nInformation Technology (IITELMIT) 2000 show, which ended on<br>\nSaturday.<\/p>\n<p>Among the companies that used the event to sign their new<br>\nbusiness deals is PT CyberCity Indonesia, a subsidiary of<br>\nSingapore-based L&amp;M Group Investments Ltd, which signed an<br>\nagreement with the U.S.-based telecoms infrastructure provider<br>\nLucent Technologies on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>CyberCity Indonesia&apos;s president Edward Soerjadjaja said that<br>\nunder the agreement, Lucent would design, construct and operate a<br>\ntelecommunications network for his company&apos;s property project<br>\ncalled CyberCity in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>He said CyberCity was not an ordinary residence and business<br>\nestate since it would be fully equipped with infrastructures for<br>\nboth voice and data communications through fixed and wireless<br>\ntelephone and Internet.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;At the first stage, we will develop web portals and a<br>\nmultimedia academy on a 10 hectare plot,&quot; Edward said, adding<br>\nthat the company had allocated at least US$50 million as initial<br>\ninvestment.<\/p>\n<p>The holding company of several Internet-based firms, PT Tele<br>\nNusa Dunia (TND), has also made use of the IITELMIT event to<br>\nadvertise its new deals with foreign partners, the Netherlands-<br>\nbased Hollandse Telecommunicatie Maatschappij (HTM) and<br>\nAustralian OnQ, to form two separate joint ventures.<\/p>\n<p>TND&apos;s director Willem Ouwens said the two newly founded joint<br>\nventures are PT HTM Indonesia and PT ONQ Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>PT HTM Indonesia, which is equally owned by TND and HTM will<br>\nprovide network installation services.<\/p>\n<p>Ouwens said that among the potential clients HTM Indonesia<br>\nexpected to target were PT Telkom&apos;s KSO partners, mobile phone<br>\noperators and other telecoms and IT-based companies.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Telecoms operators are already running out of lines, they<br>\nneed to expand their capacities,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The other new joint venture, OnQ Indonesia, is 40 percent<br>\nowned by TND and 60 percent by OnQ, Ouwens said.<\/p>\n<p>He said OnQ Indonesia would mainly provide telecommunication<br>\napplications for the banking industry and cellular<br>\ncommunications.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the two new joint ventures, TND already has major<br>\nownership of about five Internet-based firms, including portal<br>\noperator PT Portal Integrasi Indonesia and application developer<br>\nPT SmartWeb Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Another company that announced its business alliance at<br>\nIITELMIT was giant computer manufacturer Compaq.<\/p>\n<p>Compaq struck a deal with state-owned listed telecoms company<br>\nPT Telkom for the establishment of an Internet development<br>\nproject called Electronic Mega Mall.<\/p>\n<p>It said the project was developed by Telkom&apos;s multimedia<br>\ndivision by utilizing Compaq&apos;s server infrastructures.<\/p>\n<p>Compaq said the Electronic Mega Mall project was designed to<br>\nsupport the development of e-commerce portal Plasa.com as well as<br>\nTelkom&apos;s latest Internet service provider TELKOMnet Instant.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, mobile telephone operator Satelindo announced<br>\nits alliance with computer applications provider SAP Asia to<br>\ndevelop an e-business platform for the company&apos;s business<br>\noperation.
