Local firms not ready for 'global rivalry'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Most domestic companies are not yet ready to
\nface globalization of trade, unlike their competitors in
\nneighboring countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, the
\nPhilippines and Thailand, an executive said here Saturday.<\/p>\n
Bakrie Group president Tanri Abeng said in a discussion on his
\nnew book that most Indonesian companies were not ready for free
\ntrade because they were still oriented to the domestic market,
\nwhich is protected by the government.<\/p>\n
Companies currently exporting resource-based products were
\nalso not ready for tighter competition in the coming years
\nbecause they tended to export their products in the form of
\ncommodities which were not processed using high technology, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Tanri suggested that such exporting companies should process
\ntheir commodities further with high technology to increase their
\nadded value.<\/p>\n
\"Against other countries, we are not competitive yet in human
\nresource development and technology,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said the fact that no Indonesian companies operated in
\nother countries -- except a few financial firms -- indicated that
\nIndonesian firms could not compete with similar corporations
\noverseas.<\/p>\n
He also suggested that government institutions and companies
\nimprove cooperation and professionalism in a bid to increase the
\ncompetitiveness of Indonesian products overseas.<\/p>\n
Tanri plans to launch his book, Dari Meja Tanri Abeng (From
\nthe Desk of Tanri Abeng), on June 21. The book discusses Tanri's
\nideas and perspectives on management. (13)<\/p>",
