Local firms given until August to alter names<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city administration reminded companies
\nthroughout Jakarta yesterday that time is running out for them to
\nchange their names into Indonesian.<\/p>\n
Deputy Head of the City Public Order Office Yusuf Shahab said
\nthat all companies should have changed the foreign words by Aug.
\n17, when Indonesia celebrates its 50th anniversary of
\nindependence.<\/p>\n
Yusuf said that so far the administration has used only a
\n\"persuasive approach\" with companies reluctant to change their
\nnames because the issue is sensitive in some ways.<\/p>\n
\"Because Jakarta is the capital, every move that the
\nadministration takes, such as changing companies' foreign names
\ninto Indonesian, is closely watched by the world,\" he told
\nreporters.<\/p>\n
He added that companies in the neighboring Tangerang and
\nBekasi have been quicker to implement the name change.<\/p>\n
Three steps have been taken by the city administration to
\naccomplish the task: organizing a public presentation on the
\nmatter in May and June, warning the companies that still haven't
\nchanged their names by the end of July, and taking action against
\nthose which still ignore the ruling in August.<\/p>\n
Currently, he said, the city administration can only urge
\ncompanies to cover their foreign language billboards with white
\nsheeting so people cannot see them.<\/p>\n
\"But as of August, the city will not tolerate them anymore and
\nwe will not hesitate to tear down the billboards,\" Yusuf said.<\/p>\n
He added that the office has only acted against illegal
\nbanners usually hanging between two electrical or telephone
\npoles.<\/p>\n
The office, he said, had seized about 1,180 illegal banners
\nfrom various locations throughout the city between May 22 and
\nJune 1.<\/p>\n
President Soeharto commenced the national discipline movement
\non May 20 which includes popularizing the use of the Indonesian
\nlanguage among Indonesians.<\/p>\n
The city administration intends to implement the decree mainly
\non buildings along street between Pasar Ikan in West Jakarta to
\nJl. Panglima Polim in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Until now, about 135 companies in the city have agreed to
\nchange their names into Indonesian.<\/p>\n
\"Most of them are entertainment companies such as bars and
\ndiscotheques and I predict that about 40 percent of all
\nentertainment centers use foreign names,\" Yusuf said. He refused
\nto mention the total number of entertainment centers in the city.<\/p>\n
Yusuf said that among the companies are Limelight bar and
\ndiscotheque on Jl. Panglima Polim, which will be changed into
\nCahaya Terang, New Hoseki executive club in Jl. Cikini into Tiara
\nand Space House discotheque and bar in Jl. Sahardjo into Era
\nPelita Masa.<\/p>\n
Yusuf also announced that a mobile unit deployed by the office
\nto publicize the regulation has had very good results.<\/p>\n
\"The mobile unit has taken action against several companies
\nthat have ignored regulations, such as installing posters on the
\nstreet without permits,\" Yusuf said.<\/p>\n
Between May 22 and July 5 the mobile unit had taken action
\nagainst 221 companies that have violated public order
