Local champion Utut suffers second defeat<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's number one chess player, grandmaster
\nUtut Adianto, plummeted to his second shock defeat in the BNI
\ninternational tournament yesterday.<\/p>\n
It was compatriot Danny Yuswanto who blew away Utut's bid for
\nhis first title of the year. Playing with the advantageous white
\npieces, Danny employed constant attacks to tear down Utut's Caro-
\nKann defense in 39 moves.<\/p>\n
The win helped Danny leapfrog to second place, sharing it with
\nGerman grandmaster Joerg Hickl, according to the provisional
\nstandings of the 12-man tournament. Hickl and Danny have
\nadjourned their match.<\/p>\n
England's grandmaster Julian Hodgson remained on top of the
\ntable with three points, thanks to a lackluster draw with Hickl
\nin a game that lasted just 16 moves yesterday.<\/p>\n
Utut, smarting from his loss to fellow Indonesian Ruben
\nGunawan on Tuesday, opted for an open game in response to Danny's
\nrapid battling style. But it proved costly. Utut made a number of
\nmajor sacrifices which led to his defeat.<\/p>\n
Utut shared fourth spot with grandmaster Ardiansyah,
\ngrandmaster Ye Jiang Chuan and grandmaster Vladislav Tkachiev
\nwith two points each.<\/p>\n
Analysts said that Utut still has a chance to win the title,
\nwith seven games left to play.<\/p>\n
Now unbeaten, Danny is getting close to grandmaster standard.
\nHe needs 7.5 points to take the highest title in the chess world.
\nThe world chess body FIDE will grant him an international master
\ntitle if he collects 5.5 points.<\/p>\n
FIDE refused to recognize Danny's international master title
\nhe clinched in an international tournament in Yogyakarta last
\nyear. The world chess body reasoned that tournament organizers
