Local cable struggles at home<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia has failed to develop a fiber optic
\ncable manufacturing industry because contractors of
\ntelecommunications projects prefer to bring in such cables from
\ntheir own countries, an executive suggests.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia is currently developing a number of fiber optics
\ntelecommunications networks. Unfortunately, most of the projects
\nare being constructed by foreign firms which usually bring in
\ntheir own materials,\" the marketing director of PT Jembo Cable
\nCompany, Soebiantoro, said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Jembo Cable is currently the only Indonesian company capable
\nof producing fiber optic cables with an ISO-9000 standardization.<\/p>\n
Soebiantoro said that his company, established in 1973,
\nmanufactures various products, including low voltage copper
\nconductor electrical cables, low voltage aluminum conductor
\nelectrical cables, medium voltage electrical cables and
\ntelecommunications cables.<\/p>\n
\"Since October 1993 Jembo has been able to produce fiber optic
\ncables,\" he said.<\/p>\n
According to Soebiantoro, his company, which has the capacity
\nto produce 5,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables per year, has
\nnot produced any such cables since 1993.<\/p>\n
\"When we decided to enter the fiber optics business, we knew
\nthat the government would establish various fiber optic
\ntelecommunications networks. But then the foreign firms,
\nincluding NKF of the Netherlands, Sumitomo of Japan and Alcatel
\nof France, chose to use their own equipment when they established
\ntelecommunications projects in Indonesia,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said that fiber optic cable can be used in a wide range of
\nnetworks, including the signaling systems for railway traffic and
\ntelevision broadcasting networks.<\/p>\n
\"But I don't think that, for the time being, any project other
\nthan telecommunications networks uses fiber optic cables in
\nIndonesia,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The state-owned domestic telecommunications company PT Telkom,
\nis currently constructing several fiber optic networks, including
\nthe one linking Sumatra, Java and Bali, in order to improve its
\nservices.<\/p>\n
Telkom's general manager for telecommunications network
\ndevelopment planning, Achadiat Djajawinata, said recently that
\nIndonesia will use fiber optic cables for all of its
\ncommunication networks in the coming years.<\/p>\n
Soebiantoro said that Telkom has promised to involve domestic
\nfiber optic cables manufacturers in its network development.<\/p>\n
He said that in addition to Jembo, which is listed on the
\nJakarta Stock Exchange, another company, owned by Gajah Tunggal
\ngroup of Indonesia and Pirelli of Italy, will produce fiber optic
\ncables within the next few years.(icn)<\/p>",
