Local archers 'lack consistency'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): With just four weeks remaining, the national
\narchery coaches remain doubtful about their team's chances of
\nmatching their rivals at the 13th Asian Games, let alone winning
\nmedals.<\/p>\n
At the end of a two-day simulation at the Senayan archery
\nrange on Tuesday, Indonesia's South Korean coach Lee Jae-hyung
\ncould not hide his disappointment over his squad's off-target
\nperformance.<\/p>\n
\"Their shooting skills look good during practice, but when it
\ncome to competition, they easily lose concentration. They lack
\nconsistency,\" Lee said.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Archery Association is grooming eight archers
\nfor the Asiad in Bangkok from Dec. 6 to Dec. 20.<\/p>\n
Lee said his archers performed flawlessly at the beginning of
\nthe simulation, but lost composure as the event went on. \"They
\nknow how to keep their nerves under control, but it appears they
\nneed to drill themselves to concentrate a little bit better,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Local coach Daniel Lumalesil agreed with Lee, but speculated
\nthat unfamiliarity with the newly introduced competition system
\naccounted for his charges' lack of consistency.<\/p>\n
\"Some of them are only used to the old system. This influenced
\ntheir performance,\" he Daniel.<\/p>\n
The Asiad archery competition will begin with an elimination
\nround in which each archer will shoot 36 arrows from each of 70
\nmeters, 60m, 50m and 30m.<\/p>\n
Qualifiers will then go into a knock-out format using 18
\narrows. Only 12 arrows will be used in the final round.<\/p>\n
The minimum score to qualify for the knock-out stage in the
\nAsian Games will be 1,300 out of 1,440. Archers must score 160 to
\nprogress from the second round.<\/p>\n
Dwi Purwanti in the women's division and Hendra Setijawan in
\nthe men's category were the best among Indonesia's
\nunderachievers, scoring 1,234 points and 1,219 points
\nrespectively.<\/p>\n
Nurfitriyana scored a low 103 when she tried a second-round
\ncompetition. Her performance was much better than her teammates,
\nwith Lucia coming a distant second with 95 points. Hendra led the
\nmen's division with 107 points, followed by Yulianto on 104 and
\nWahyu Hidayat on 103.<\/p>\n
Psychologist Monty Setyadharma said that the archers were
\ntense during the event because they might have been affected by
\ntheir opponents.<\/p>\n
\"It's really difficult for them to get the right self-control
\nbefore shooting. Lee is trying to find the athletes' individual
\nrhythm and it takes a long time,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Monty said the only way to improve the archers' concentration
\nwas to train them to relax.<\/p>\n
Nurfitriyana, who won the 1988 Olympic silver medal with
\nLilies Handayani and Kusumawardhani, admitted that maintaining
\nconsistency was her main problem.<\/p>\n
\"We are using a new technique. Without full concentration,
\nit's difficult for us to shoot consistently,\" she said. (yan)<\/p>",
