Local angry over waste from pig farms<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): About 300 residents of Tanjung Burung village
\nin Teluk Naga district here went to the Tangerang regency office
\non Tuesday to protest pig farming in their village.<\/p>\n
They said the closure of the pig farms was needed because its
\nowners dumped waste straight into the nearby Cisadane river,
\nwhere local residents bathed, washed clothes and took drinking
\nwater.<\/p>\n
The pig farms, which started operating in 1983, also spread a
\nreally bad smell over the surrounding area, the protesters
\nclaimed.<\/p>\n
They urged regent Agus Djunara to remove Teluk Naga district
\nhead Abdul Chalik for his alleged involvement in nepotistic
\npractices linked to the farm's operation.<\/p>\n
Sahroni, one of the protesters, said that they flocked to the
\nregency office because their previous protests were not heeded
\nadequately.<\/p>\n
He said they rented several minivans to transport the
\nresidents the 26 kilometers from their village.<\/p>\n
\"Even though we are forced to spend much money, it is okay for
\nthe sake of our struggle,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Sahroni threatened to return to the office with more people if
\nthe authorities did not pay proper attention to the protesters'
\ncomplaints.<\/p>\n
\"Yes we will come here again if our demand is not met,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Regency spokeswoman Ena Karlina has said in the past that the
\nauthorities are powerless to prevent people running pig farms on
\ntheir properties, even if they did not have permits authorizing
\nthe practice.<\/p>\n
\"The farms are illegal, but they are no different from chicken
\nor goat farms, so we are powerless to take stiff measures against
\nthe owners,\" she said.<\/p>\n
But Karlina said that pig owners should be careful over how
\nthey disposed of waste from their farms.<\/p>\n
She said that based on an agreement reached by regency
\nofficials and representatives of local residents, the
\ngovernment's livestock husbandry office had been assigned to put
\nthe pig farms in the area in order.<\/p>\n
\"A team assigned to handle the case reported that the pig farm
\nowners made mudholes to accommodate waste from the farms. But
\nwe'll check on this,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Budianto, Teluk Naga district's secretary, said there were six
\npig farms in his area, of which only one was legal.<\/p>\n
