        "content": "<p>Local angry over waste from pig farms<\/p>\n<p>TANGERANG (JP): About 300 residents of Tanjung Burung village<br>\nin Teluk Naga district here went to the Tangerang regency office<br>\non Tuesday to protest pig farming in their village.<\/p>\n<p>They said the closure of the pig farms was needed because its<br>\nowners dumped waste straight into the nearby Cisadane river,<br>\nwhere local residents bathed, washed clothes and took drinking<br>\nwater.<\/p>\n<p>The pig farms, which started operating in 1983, also spread a<br>\nreally bad smell over the surrounding area, the protesters<br>\nclaimed.<\/p>\n<p>They urged regent Agus Djunara to remove Teluk Naga district<br>\nhead Abdul Chalik for his alleged involvement in nepotistic<br>\npractices linked to the farm's operation.<\/p>\n<p>Sahroni, one of the protesters, said that they flocked to the<br>\nregency office because their previous protests were not heeded<br>\nadequately.<\/p>\n<p>He said they rented several minivans to transport the<br>\nresidents the 26 kilometers from their village.<\/p>\n<p>\"Even though we are forced to spend much money, it is okay for<br>\nthe sake of our struggle,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sahroni threatened to return to the office with more people if<br>\nthe authorities did not pay proper attention to the protesters'<br>\ncomplaints.<\/p>\n<p>\"Yes we will come here again if our demand is not met,\" he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Regency spokeswoman Ena Karlina has said in the past that the<br>\nauthorities are powerless to prevent people running pig farms on<br>\ntheir properties, even if they did not have permits authorizing<br>\nthe practice.<\/p>\n<p>\"The farms are illegal, but they are no different from chicken<br>\nor goat farms, so we are powerless to take stiff measures against<br>\nthe owners,\" she said.<\/p>\n<p>But Karlina said that pig owners should be careful over how<br>\nthey disposed of waste from their farms.<\/p>\n<p>She said that based on an agreement reached by regency<br>\nofficials and representatives of local residents, the<br>\ngovernment's livestock husbandry office had been assigned to put<br>\nthe pig farms in the area in order.<\/p>\n<p>\"A team assigned to handle the case reported that the pig farm<br>\nowners made mudholes to accommodate waste from the farms. But<br>\nwe'll check on this,\" she said.<\/p>\n<p>Budianto, Teluk Naga district's secretary, said there were six<br>\npig farms in his area, of which only one was legal.<\/p>\n<p>The farms were all owned by individuals, he said.
