Local against Cangkir tourism<\/p>\n

Residents of coastal villages in Kronjo district, Tangerang
\nregency, have joined the chorus urging the administration to
\ncancel management by state-run forestry company PT Perhutani of
\nthe sacred Cangkir islet.<\/p>\n
Head of Kronjo village, Sutrisno, said that residents were
\nmaking a petition against the presence of Perhutani on the
\nisland.<\/p>\n
"Before the regental administration handed over management (to
\nPerhutani) of the islet and the sacred tomb on it, there was no
\nproblem," he told The Jakarta Post on Monday.<\/p>\n
Management of the islet was handed to Perhutani last year by
\nlocal regent Ismet Iskandar.<\/p>\n
Johan, a visitor to the grave of Pangeran Jagad Lautan (Prince
\nof the Oceans), said that currently Perhutani charges visitors Rp
\n2,000 to enter the grave compound, while ojek (motorcycle taxi)
\ndrivers who take the visitors to the island have to pay Rp 1,000.<\/p>\n
"Our objection against the presence of Perhutani is not
\nwithout reason. Cangkir islet is not a resort like Ancol in North
\nJakarta. It is a sacred place where visitors only come for
\ndevotional visits," Johan remarked.<\/p>\n
Pangeran Jagad Lautan is remembered as one of the great ulemas
\nof the Banten region. Visitors from all parts of the country come
\nto his grave for devotional visits, often asking for blessings.<\/p>\n
Kronjo district chief Kusnadi said on Monday that he had
\nrecently held a meeting with Perhutani, the Tangerang office of
\ntrade and industry, the Tangerang tourism agency and village
\nrepresentative bodies to discuss the people's demands.<\/p>\n
"We have made a joint agreement in which Perhutani has
\npromised to revise its management of the island ... the revision
\nwould be disseminated to residents soon," he said.<\/p>\n
The small islet is located 25 kilometers northwest of
\nTangerang municipality. Visitors reach it via the Balaraja toll
\nroad.<\/p>\n
In 1995, the local administration reclaimed part of the sea
\nand built a bridge to enable land transport to the islet.<\/p>\n
Besides the grave, the natural beauty of the islet also
\nattracts tourists.<\/p>\n
Many hectares of fish ponds, water embankments and villages
\nline the road. Visitors often walk around the islet or rent
\nboats.<\/p>\n
Deniwati, who heads the Tangerang tourism division, told the
\nPost that the number of visitors to the islet on working days
\ncould reach 200.<\/p>\n
"On holidays, the number is usually more than 1,000," she
\nsaid.<\/p>",
