Lists of legislative candidates tardy<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Only two of the 48 parties -- The National
\nAwakening Party (PKB) and the Indonesian People's Party (Pari) --
\nlook set to meet Tuesday's deadline for submission of a list of
\nlegislative candidates to the National Elections Committee (PPI).<\/p>\n
Committee chairman Jacob Tobing said on Monday the PPI would
\nbe saddled with paper work in coming weeks, because parties had
\nfailed to meet the deadline.<\/p>\n
\"But this is a consequence of an election with a limited time
\nframe for arrangements,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The committee will announce a temporary list of legislative
\ncandidates on May 12 and a permanent one on May 19, the day
\nmarking the end of the campaign period.<\/p>\n
Jacob said the committee would tolerate submission of names
\nuntil May 12, with changes permissible up to May 18.<\/p>\n
KPU spokesman Djohermansyah Djohan said PKB submitted a list
\nof legislative candidates for all 27 provinces, while Pari
\npresented candidates for 20 provinces.<\/p>\n
\"We will wait up until midnight on Tuesday. We are ready to
\nadd to our workforce to deal with the paperwork. There is a
\nmarked tendency for parties to submit lists on the deadline.\"<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, members of the General Elections Commission (KPU)
\nwho recently surveyed poll preparations in provinces, reported
\nthat most provincial social political affairs chiefs had taken
\nover provincial elections committees' tasks or interfered too
\nmuch in their affairs.<\/p>\n
\"(Elections committees from) Central, West and East Java,
\nSumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi, as well as the East and West
\nNusa Tenggara committees have complained about the domination of
\nsocial political affairs chiefs,\" said deputy chairman of KPU
\nAdnan Buyung Nasution.<\/p>\n
\"This is wrong. We will issue a letter to all provincial
\nelections committees to ensure all officials are free to perform
\ntheir duties... there is no need for bureaucrats to interfere in
\nthe process.\"<\/p>\n
In Yogyakarta, only four parties had submitted lists of local
\nlegislature candidates to the provincial elections committee --
\nthe Love Peace Party, the Deliberation, Work and Cooperation
\nParty (MKGR), the United Development Party (PPP) and the
\nIndonesian National Party led by Supeni (PNI-Supeni).<\/p>\n
Committee chairman Nur Achmad said parties had cited the
\ndifficulty of recruiting candidates. \"In the past, candidates
\nwere appointed by their central boards,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Eep Saefulloh Fatah, a former member of the Team of
\nEleven, the group who paved the way for the KPU, said the public
\nshould be provided with all necessary information about the
\nelections.<\/p>\n
\"It is strange that many people living near Jakarta are yet to
\nknow the number of parties contesting the elections,\" he said at
\na seminar on election supervision in Bandung, West Java, on
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
He emphasized that public acceptance of the elections' results
\nwould depend not only on arrangements and preparations for the
\npolls, but also on public participation.<\/p>\n
In Surabaya, East Java, parties publicized their platforms to
\nresidents on Monday. Parties set up stands in the Surabaya Plaza
\nparking lot and gave away leaflets, T-shirts, flags and other
\nparty merchandise.<\/p>\n
Visitors shunned the Golkar Party stand, but flocked to stands
\nbelonging to the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI
\nPerjuangan), the PKB and the National Mandate Party (PAN).
