US President Donald Trump has issued a series of inconsistent statements regarding the closure of the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating conflict with Iran following a US-Israel attack on 28 February 2026. Initially seeking NATO assistance to reopen the strait, Trump later dismissed the need for help, criticised NATO as a "paper tiger" and "cowards," and threatened to withhold future support from allies while blaming them for high oil prices. His rhetoric culminated in vows to end the war within weeks and to bomb Iran back to the Stone Age, highlighting tensions in international alliances and the global energy market.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly made statements regarding
the closure of the Strait of Hormuz amid the conflict with Iran. Trump’s
statements have frequently changed.

As is known, the US and Israel attacked Iran on 28 February 2026. As
a result, Iran tightened the route in the Strait of Hormuz.

Regarding the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Trump has made several
statements. Trump initially requested assistance from NATO countries.
However, these statements changed again. Trump delivered these
statements via his Truth Social account.

14 March: Requests NATO Assistance

When Hormuz was closed, Trump said many countries were affected. He
hoped for assistance from NATO countries to help reopen the route.

“Many countries, especially those affected by Iran’s efforts to close
the Strait of Hormuz, will send warships, along with the United States,
to keep the strait open and safe,” Trump said on 14 March.

“Hopefully China, France, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and other
countries affected by this man-made restriction will send ships to the
area so that the Strait of Hormuz is no longer a threat to countries
that have been truly paralysed,” he stated.

16 March: Does Not Need Assistance

However, many countries rejected Trump’s request. Trump then claimed
he did not need help from others.

“We don’t need assistance. The war has been going on for a long time
in my opinion, almost from the first day,” he said on 16 March.

20 March: Mocks NATO

Trump then mocked NATO. Trump called NATO a paper tiger.

“WITHOUT THE US, NATO IS JUST A PAPER TIGER!” Trump wrote on 20
March.

On the same day, Trump mocked NATO again. He called NATO cowards.

“Now that the battle has been won militarily, with very little danger
to them, they complain about the high oil prices they are forced to pay,
but do not want to help open the Strait of Hormuz, a simple military
manoeuvre that is the only reason for the high oil prices. It would be
very easy for them to do it, with very little risk,” he wrote.

“Cowards, and we will remember it!”

26 March: Will Not Support Allies

Trump was angry again with the attitude of allied countries. He
claimed he would not help them anymore.

“They should have jumped to help us, because for years we have helped
them avoid war,” he revealed on 26 March.

31 March: Blames Other Countries, Ready to End the War

On 31 March, Trump once again mocked other countries. He asked other
countries to open the Strait of Hormuz themselves.

“All countries that cannot get jet fuel because of the Strait of
Hormuz… I have a suggestion for you: Number 1, buy from the US, we have
plenty, and Number 2, gather your long-overdue courage, go to that
Strait, and take it…” he said.

On the same day, Trump said he would end the war. He estimated that
the war would end in two weeks. Even without an agreement.

“We are finishing this job, and I think maybe in two weeks, maybe a
few days longer, to finish this job,” Trump stated.

1 April: Will Attack Iran to Bring It Back to the Stone Age

However, Trump again said he would attack Iran. Trump said this would
bring Iran back to the Stone Age.

Trump made that statement in his speech at the White House on
Wednesday (1/4) evening. Trump said he would bring Iran to the Stone
Age.

“We will attack them very hard for the next two to three weeks,”
Trump said, quoted by CNN on Thursday (2/4/2026).

“We will bring them back to the Stone Age, where they belong,” he
said.
",
