Indonesia\u2019s data centre demand is rising sharply in line with the\nrapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing,\npushing the industry to shift from air-based cooling technology to\nliquid cooling as the infrastructure solution of the future.<\/p>\n
\u2018All data centres are already heading toward AI data centres. In\nother words, almost all data centres will change their infrastructure\nfrom the air-cooled to the liquid-cooled,\u2019 said Schneider Electric\nIndonesia\u2019s Business VP Data Centre Ellya Cen during the Media\nMasterclass titled Liquid Cooling & Next-Gen Data Centre\nInfrastructure in Jakarta, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The shift is driven by the surge in computational power demand. The\npower requirement per server rack continues to rise dramatically with\nthe arrival of the latest generation AI chips which are denser and\nhotter.<\/p>\n
\u2018What used to be 3 kilowatts has become 120 kilowatts. And this year\nin Q3 Rubin server will be released, one rack is 600 kilowatts,\u2019 said\nIDPRO Chairman Hendra Suryakusuma.<\/p>\n
The heat surge is what makes conventional air cooling no longer\nadequate, 70 percent of the heat in data centres originates from the\nservers, making cooling the entire room an inefficient approach.<\/p>\n
\u2018Liquid cooling is becoming something very important, because the\nload per rack has already risen dramatically compared to the old days\nwhen it might have been only 13 kilowatts; now it\u2019s more than 130 and\nthere will be more,\u2019 Ellya said.<\/p>\n
The growth of Indonesia\u2019s data centre industry itself reflects the\nmagnitude of the demand. IDPRO, founded in 2016, previously managed 32\nmegawatts from 5 members; now it has grown to 21 members with an\noperational capacity of around 520 megawatts.<\/p>\n
Nationally, Indonesia\u2019s total installed capacity has surpassed 600\nmegawatts and is projected to reach 1.6 gigawatts by the end of 2026.\nThis potential is supported by projections of Indonesia\u2019s internet\neconomy expected to reach $350 billion by 2030, making it the largest in\nSoutheast Asia.<\/p>\n
Global investments flows are pushing expansion as well. Indonesia\u2019s\nstable geopolitical position has drawn many investors to the country,\nincluding several major players increasing their investment commitments\nsignificantly. IDPRO itself is actively involved in the formation of AI\nwhite papers and green data centre standards as part of preparing\nindustry standards in the face of rapid AI-based data centre development\nahead.<\/p>\n
Amid the rapid growth, Schneider Electric asserted its readiness by\nacquiring Motivair, the US-based liquid cooling brand that supplies\ncooling for six of the world\u2019s ten fastest supercomputers.<\/p>\n
