        "content": "<p>Lippo group to use Indonesian names<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Lippo group, owned by businessman Mochtar Riady,<br>\nhas agreed to replace the foreign names of its branches with<br>\nIndonesian names.<\/p>\n<p>A memorandum of understanding was signed on Tuesday by Mochtar<br>\nRiady and head of the Language Development Center, Hasan Alwi.<br>\nMinister of Education and Culture Wardiman Djojonegoro, State<br>\nMinister of Public Housing Akbar Tanjung and Enggartiasto Lukita,<br>\ngeneral chairman of the Indonesian Real Estate Association,<br>\nwitnessed the signing.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Lippo supports the government&apos;s promotion of the use of the<br>\nIndonesian language. Language is one of the factors that can<br>\nunite people. That is why we cooperated with the Education and<br>\nCulture Department to find the right terms,&quot; Mochtar said.<\/p>\n<p>Lippo group has yet to announce the new names and how much the<br>\nproject will cost. &quot;We hope that this project can be finished as<br>\nsoon as possible,&quot; said Mochtar.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the Language Development Center&apos;s guidelines for the<br>\nproper use of Indonesian, Lippo Bank should be called Bank Lippo,<br>\nLippo Land changed to Bumi Lippo, Lippo City to Lippo Pura and<br>\nLippo Village to Dukuh Lippo.<\/p>\n<p>The memorandum of understanding was signed in response to the<br>\ngovernment&apos;s call for all housing estates, hotels, shopping<br>\ncenters and office buildings to replace their foreign names<br>\nbefore Aug. 17, the 50th anniversary of Indonesia&apos;s independence.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Using Indonesian terms does not necessarily mean the<br>\nbusinesses will lose their customers. They can still find the<br>\nright Indonesian terms appropriate for their target,&quot; Minister<br>\nTanjung said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We have studied Indonesian language since childhood but now<br>\nwe are not using it properly. We are even proud to use foreign<br>\nlanguages instead of the Indonesian language,&quot; Wardiman said,<br>\nadding that the use of foreign names makes Indonesian people feel<br>\nas if they were in other countries, not in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The excessive use of foreign terms makes us feel inferior and<br>\nit reflects an erosion of pride in our own language. It is<br>\ndangerous for younger generations,&quot; Wardiman asserted.<\/p>\n<p>Jakarta Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said recently that the city<br>\nadministration had issued Regional Regulation No.1 in 1992,<br>\nregarding the proper use of Indonesian on billboards and for the<br>\nnames of office buildings and business centers.<\/p>\n<p>Aug. 17 has been set as the deadline for all foreign names to<br>\ndisappear.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;At first I doubted the businesses response to the<br>\ngovernment&apos;s call for the changing of the foreign names into<br>\nIndonesian, but I was mistaken.
