Lippo group to use Indonesian names<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Lippo group, owned by businessman Mochtar Riady,
\nhas agreed to replace the foreign names of its branches with
\nIndonesian names.<\/p>\n
A memorandum of understanding was signed on Tuesday by Mochtar
\nRiady and head of the Language Development Center, Hasan Alwi.
\nMinister of Education and Culture Wardiman Djojonegoro, State
\nMinister of Public Housing Akbar Tanjung and Enggartiasto Lukita,
\ngeneral chairman of the Indonesian Real Estate Association,
\nwitnessed the signing.<\/p>\n
"Lippo supports the government's promotion of the use of the
\nIndonesian language. Language is one of the factors that can
\nunite people. That is why we cooperated with the Education and
\nCulture Department to find the right terms," Mochtar said.<\/p>\n
Lippo group has yet to announce the new names and how much the
\nproject will cost. "We hope that this project can be finished as
\nsoon as possible," said Mochtar.<\/p>\n
Based on the Language Development Center's guidelines for the
\nproper use of Indonesian, Lippo Bank should be called Bank Lippo,
\nLippo Land changed to Bumi Lippo, Lippo City to Lippo Pura and
\nLippo Village to Dukuh Lippo.<\/p>\n
The memorandum of understanding was signed in response to the
\ngovernment's call for all housing estates, hotels, shopping
\ncenters and office buildings to replace their foreign names
\nbefore Aug. 17, the 50th anniversary of Indonesia's independence.<\/p>\n
"Using Indonesian terms does not necessarily mean the
\nbusinesses will lose their customers. They can still find the
\nright Indonesian terms appropriate for their target," Minister
\nTanjung said.<\/p>\n
"We have studied Indonesian language since childhood but now
\nwe are not using it properly. We are even proud to use foreign
\nlanguages instead of the Indonesian language," Wardiman said,
\nadding that the use of foreign names makes Indonesian people feel
\nas if they were in other countries, not in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
"The excessive use of foreign terms makes us feel inferior and
\nit reflects an erosion of pride in our own language. It is
\ndangerous for younger generations," Wardiman asserted.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said recently that the city
\nadministration had issued Regional Regulation No.1 in 1992,
\nregarding the proper use of Indonesian on billboards and for the
\nnames of office buildings and business centers.<\/p>\n
Aug. 17 has been set as the deadline for all foreign names to
\ndisappear.<\/p>\n
"At first I doubted the businesses response to the
\ngovernment's call for the changing of the foreign names into
\nIndonesian, but I was mistaken. Their response is very good
