LIPI to study students' devoutness<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Institute of Sciences is
\npreparing to study how religious Indonesian university students
\nare.<\/p>\n
The institute will also look at how university students cope
\nwith conflicting values, and their role in increasing people's
\nenthusiasm for religious activities.<\/p>\n
The head researcher of the institute's department of religion
\nand philosophy, Ibnu Qoyim Isma'il, was quoted by Antara
\nyesterday as saying that preparations for the study were in the
\nfinal stages.<\/p>\n
He said the study would look at religious activities on campus
\nfrom the 1970s until now.<\/p>\n
One of study's aims is to explain how students become
\nattracted to religious activities once they have entered
\nuniversity.<\/p>\n
\"We wish to find out what factors draw them to become involved
\nin the campus' religious activities,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said that before the 1970s, many strong Islamic families
\nwere reluctant to send their children to public schools,
\npreferring religious schools.<\/p>\n
But in the 1970s these families started sending their children
\nto public schools, exposing them to universal values different
\nfrom the values they had been raised with, he said.<\/p>\n
\"(They were exposed to) clashes of values. What's interesting,
\nhowever, is that this situation encouraged activities studying
\nreligious values,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"The students' decision to study religious values at
\nuniversity, where the main focus is rationality, was an
\ninteresting phenomenon,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Ibnu Qoyim said the current trend of executives returning to
\nreligious values could be traced to their student days.<\/p>\n
But he said studies should be done to see if people were
\nbecoming more devout or just increasingly preoccupied with
\nritual.<\/p>\n
He said ideally people becoming more devout would affect their
\nsocial awareness.<\/p>\n
They then could help \"to search for the root of social
\nproblems such as corruption and collusion,\" he said. (swe)<\/p>",
