        "content": "<p>Lions Club Int&apos;l president praises local Lions Club<\/p>\n<p>Abdul Khalik, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Lions Club Indonesia received a roar of approval from Lions Club<br>\nInternational president Clement F. Kusiak on Sunday for its work<br>\nin the country.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I am very proud of what Lions Club Indonesia members have<br>\ndone, especially for their quick response to disasters in Aceh<br>\nand other places,&quot; Kusiak said during a press conference here on<br>\nSunday.<\/p>\n<p>Kusiak, who arrived in Jakarta on Saturday for a three-day<br>\nvisit, encouraged club members to continue their good work in the<br>\ncountry, which has been hit by a tsunami and a string of<br>\nearthquakes over the past few months.<\/p>\n<p>Lions Club District 307 B governor Charles Ong Saerang said<br>\nKusiak would visit several of Lions Club Indonesia&apos;s projects in<br>\nJakarta before leaving on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>During a lunch in his honor on Sunday, Kusiak presented awards<br>\nto the National Family Planning Coordinating Agency, the Family<br>\nWelfare Movement and club volunteers for their outstanding<br>\ncontributions to the country.<\/p>\n<p>The lunch was also attended by representatives from several<br>\ngovernment agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Lions Club, which commits itself to helping people throughout<br>\nthe world, has over a million members in 193 countries worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>According to Eddy Widjanarko, the club&apos;s council chairman in<br>\nIndonesia, besides helping people in areas hit by natural<br>\ndisaster like Aceh, North Sumatra and Nias, Lion Clubs Indonesia<br>\noperates health, education and environmental programs, as well as<br>\na youth exchange.<\/p>\n<p>The club has allocated about US$5.6 million for emergency<br>\nrelief efforts and $1.25 million for its health, education and<br>\nenvironmental programs.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We went directly to Aceh right after the tsunami hit the<br>\nprovince, and now we have people in Nias to help people there.<br>\nHowever, we are also very famous for our activities helping<br>\npeople with cataract problems. We have helped about 50,000 people<br>\nwith cataracts in Indonesia receive surgery,&quot; Eddy said.<\/p>\n<p>The club&apos;s youth exchange program has sent many young<br>\nIndonesians to other countries and has long been a model for<br>\nhomestays abroad, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The main goal of the exchange program, according to Eddy, is<br>\nto expose young Indonesians to other cultures.<\/p>",
