        "content": "<p>Lion Air to commerce flights to S'pore<\/p>\n<p>Deutsche Press-Agentur, Singapore<\/p>\n<p>The race among budget airlines to fly to Singapore is heating up <br>\nwith a third player, Jakarta-based Lion Air, joining the fray, a <br>\nspokesman said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\"Singapore is a very important market for us,\" Lion Air <br>\nspokesman Hasyim Arsal told the daily newspaper Streats.<\/p>\n<p>\"We believe both Singaporeans and Indonesians will benefit <br>\nfrom Lion Air's connectivity within Indonesia,\" he was quoted as <br>\nsaying.<\/p>\n<p>Lion Air is set to fly four times daily to Changi starting <br>\nNov. 14, likely charging S$90 (US$62) for a round-trip ticket or <br>\nat least 30 percent less than other airlines plying the Jakarta-<br>\nSingapore route.<\/p>\n<p>Many Indonesians currently fly to the island of Batam and then <br>\ntake the ferry to Singapore to save on direct airfares, Arsal <br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Lion Air was started by Indonesian businessman Rusdi Kirana in <br>\nJune 2000 following the deregulation of Indonesia's aviation <br>\nindustry.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore will be the second international destination for <br>\nLion Air, which already flies four times daily from Jakarta to <br>\nKuala Lumpur.<\/p>\n<p>Valuair, a no-frills carrier started by a former Singapore <br>\nAirlines (SIA) executive, plans to take off in the second quarter <br>\nof next year with short-haul flights from Changi Airport.<\/p>\n<p>Arsal said that Lion Air is similar to Malaysia's AirAsia in <br>\nthat \"we're low-fare, but we're a full service airline.\"<\/p>\n<p>AirAsia, founded less than two years ago, starts flying twice <br>\ndaily between nearby Johor Baru and Kuala Lumpur starting Oct. <br>\n22.<\/p>\n<p>With Changi Airport regarded as too expensive, AirAsia chief <br>\nTony Fernandes said the airline may consider using the small <br>\nSeletar Airport instead.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore Airlines (SIA) rejected last week a partnership with <br>\nThailand to set up a no-frills carrier based in the northern Thai <br>\ncity of Chiang Mai.<\/p>\n<p>The flag carrier has not ruled out setting up its own budget <br>\ncarrier based in Singapore.
