        "content": "<p>Lignite plants ignite Thai protest<\/p>\n<p>BANGKOK (AP): More than 5,000 protesters burned Thai Prime<br>\nMinister Chuan Leekpai in effigy while demanding the government<br>\nback off plans to build three lignite power plants, a local paper<br>\nreported on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters in the port city of Prachuab Khiri Khan, 230<br>\nkilometers southwest of Bangkok, gathered in front of the<br>\nprovincial hall on Tuesday and said they would return on<br>\nWednesday, The Bangkok Post reported.<\/p>\n<p>They said they were angry because lignite, or brown coal,<br>\npollutes the air and the government had ignored their opposition<br>\nto the projects since 1996.<\/p>\n<p>Thammayuth Suthivicha, former president of the Electricity<br>\nGenerating Authority of Thailand's employees association, said<br>\nEGAT would not be able to solve the pollution problems caused by<br>\nburning lignite, according to the Post.<\/p>",
