Lights of fancy<\/p>\n
Entering the imposing gate at the Suzhou Lantern Festival 2003 at
\nthe Jakarta Fair in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, is like stepping
\ninto a little corner of China.<\/p>\n
Situated in the Pasar Gambir section of the fairground, the
\nfestival features beautifully designed silk lanterns in all
\nshapes and sizes, made by Chinese company Suzhou Gu Su Lanterns
\nand Art Co. Ltd.<\/p>\n
They are presented in the recreation of a Chinese city,
\nSuzhou, complete with a sprawling good fortune tree and that
\nclassical designed gate.<\/p>\n
Naturally, important symbols and motifs in Chinese culture are
\non show throughout. There is a temple and palace, the latter
\ncarrying the description \"the 100th birthday celebration of the
\nking's mother\" and showing the queen mother watching a dance.<\/p>\n
There are also animal-shaped lanterns, like goats, known to
\nbring good fortune, and the mythical dragon. A symbol of grandeur
\nand power in Chinese culture, the dragon is portrayed in several
\nlanterns, including \"the nine dragon wall\", which recreates a
\nstructure in Beihai park, Beijing.<\/p>\n
There are also dozens of flamingos in the foreground of one
\ndisplay, with a large Chinese boat ready to cross the sea in the
\nbackground.<\/p>\n
The reception to the festival has been so outstanding that it
\nwill be extended until the end of July. The beacons of creativity
\nand friendship will keep on shining.<\/p>",
