Light sentence sought for policeman<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: A military prosecutor on Friday demanded only 11
\nmonths in prison for First Brig. Pambudi, a member of the West
\nJakarta Police department whose stray bullet killed a civilian in
\n2001.<\/p>\n
The prosecutor, Maj. Sigit Prasodjo, told a hearing in the
\ncity's military court that the defendant, who is a member of the
\npolice Mobile Brigade, must be jailed for negligence of his duty,
\nwhich claimed the life of Yudianto on Feb. 28, 2001.<\/p>\n
Yudianto's mother Mariana, who attended the trial, fainted in
\nthe courtroom shortly after hearing the lenient sentence demand.<\/p>\n
The lawyers representing Yudianto's family from the Jakarta
\nLegal Aid Institute (LBH) strongly protested the light sentence
\nsought by the military prosecutor.<\/p>\n
\"It (the demand) is far from anything resembling justice,\" the
\nLBH said in a press statement.<\/p>\n
It said the light sentence demand shows the security
\nauthorities were not serious in enforcing the law against their
\nmembers who violated the law.<\/p>\n
The lawyers urged the Military Court to hand a heavier
\nsentence for the defendant. --JP

TANGERANG: Natalia, 31, a resident from Poris Indah housing
\ncomplex, Cipondoh district, Tangerang municipality, screamed
\nhysterically when she got home from work at 5 p.m. on Thursday,
\nas she found her husband Andre, 37, hanging from the kitchen door
\nframe.<\/p>\n
Her scream summoned several neighbors who went over and helped
\ntake down the body of Andre, who had apparently hanged himself
\nwith a length of plastic rope.<\/p>\n
Natalia said that her husband had not complained about
\nanything in particular, but she was aware that since he quit from
\nhis workplace recently, her husband had been reluctant to talk
\nand had been silent most of the time.<\/p>\n
Late on Thursday evening, Feriandi, 35, a resident from
\nKerocong Permai housing development, Jatiuwung, died when his
\nhead was crushed at Jl. Daan Mogot kilometer 24, Batu Ceper
\ndistrict.<\/p>\n
Slamet, an eyewitness, said that the victim was riding his
\nHonda motorbike at high speed and was trying to overtake a
\ncontainer truck heading from Jakarta to Tangerang.<\/p>\n
\"But his motorcycle bumped into the truck, he
\nlost control and fell, and the truck's rear tires ran over his
\nhead,\" said the cigarette kiosk owner.<\/p>\n
The victim died instantly, while the truck driver escaped.
\nTangerang Traffic Police deputy chief Titik Setiowaty said that
\nas of Friday afternoon, the police could not identify the driver,
