Lifting body mulls coach's contract<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Weightlifting, Power lifting and
\nBodybuilding Association is leaning toward not renewing the
\ncontract of Bulgarian coach Nedelcho Kolev to give local coaches
\nmore experience.<\/p>\n
Association spokesman Budi Santoso, speaking after a meeting
\nWednesday, said the contract ended on Dec. 31, and the
\nassociation believed it should give more opportunities to local
\ncoaches to train lifters.<\/p>\n
But no definite decision on the contract issue was reached at
\nthe meeting as members were still considering benefits of
\nextending Kolev's term.<\/p>\n
"We still need to mull whether we need to extend the contract,
\nincluding asking the athletes," Budi said.<\/p>\n
The association's main problem is payment of Kolev's monthly
\nsalary of US$3,000. The depreciation of the rupiah has caused a
\nsteep rise in this expenditure.<\/p>\n
Budi said Kolev was a qualified coach but local coaches needed
\nmore chances to demonstrate their skills in training athletes.<\/p>\n
"I believe our coaches, who assisted Kolev during the 19th SEA
\nGames in October, have learned the methodology from the Bulgarian
\ncoach," he said.<\/p>\n
The association plans to select only the most qualified
\nathletes to compete abroad this year in a move to greater
\nefficiency.<\/p>\n
"There are some important events abroad in 1998, and we'll
\nsend athletes to compete, especially those who have been listed
\nin the world rankings. They must compete in the world
\nchampionships," Budi said.<\/p>\n
Antara reported the association had started its national
\ntraining for the 13th Asian Games in Bangkok next December.
\nFifteen lifters are based at the centers in Lampung and Bogor.
