The Euphrates and Tigris rivers, which have historically sustained the Middle East's most fertile regions, are drying up rapidly and are projected to run dry by 2040 due to declining water levels and climate change. The phenomenon was reportedly foretold by the Prophet Muhammad in Islamic tradition, and approximately 60 million people across Turkey and Iraq depend on these river systems for survival.

The Euphrates and Tigris rivers once flowed through highly fertile
regions. However, they are now changing rapidly and are estimated to dry
up by 2040.

This phenomenon was reportedly warned by the Prophet Muhammad long
before modern times. The following is the account:

“The Day of Judgment will not come until the Euphrates dries up and
uncovers a mountain of gold, so that people will fight and kill one
another over it” (Reported by Muslim No. 2894).

The Euphrates flows through several countries, from Turkey, Syria,
and Iraq, before emptying into the Persian Gulf. It forms the largest
river system in the Western Asian region.

The Euphrates, running alongside the Tigris River, is part of a
fertile zone. The surrounding area has ideal conditions for agriculture
and even hosted the world’s first civilisations, such as
Mesopotamia.

However, this river system is now drying up extremely rapidly. A 2021
report from the Ministry of Water Resources even warned that the river
could run dry by 2040.

The report explains that the river is drying due to declining water
levels and drought caused by climate change. Water flow in the
Euphrates-Tigris system has decreased by nearly half in just a few
decades. Satellite imagery shows that 144 cubic kilometres of freshwater
disappeared in a ten-year period from 2003 to 2013.

Making matters worse, people in the surrounding areas depend on this
river system. Approximately 60 million people depend on water from the
Euphrates-Tigris river system for their survival, particularly in Turkey
and Iraq.
",
