Life sentence sought for Thai girl<\/p>\n
TANGERANG: A prosecutor asked the Tangerang District Court on
\nMonday to jail a Thai woman for life for allegedly attempting to
\nsmuggle 850 grams of heroin into Indonesia from Thailand.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Hasran Harahap asked that Nonthanam M. Saichon, a
\n21-year-old masseuse, be jailed for life as she was guilty of
\nshipping the drug from Bangkok last year.<\/p>\n
Hasran said the defendant had ignored a government campaign to
\nfight drug abuse, and could ruin the lives of many Indonesians.<\/p>\n
The defendant told the court that she had accepted an offer to
\nsmuggle the drug because she needed money to pay for medical
\ntreatment for her sick parents.<\/p>\n
The defendant apologized to the Indonesian people and begged
\nthe judges to give her a light sentence.<\/p>\n
Nonthanam was arrested minutes after she arrived at Soekarno-
\nHatta International Airport from Bangkok on Sept. 1, 2001.
\nCustoms officers became suspicious as she looked nervous. They
\nlater found the drug in her underwear.<\/p>\n
The court adjourned the session until March 6 when defense
\nlawyer Husin Tuhuteru will present his arguments.<\/p>\n
Over the past two years, the district court has sentenced 16
\npeople to death for smuggling, including one person found in
\npossession of 450 grams of heroin. --JP<\/p>",
