Library on the environment opens its doors to the public<\/p>\n

The country's first public library specializing in environmental
\nissues opened on Wednesday with the goal of providing people with
\ngreater access to information on the environment.<\/p>\n
State Minister for the Environment Nabiel Makarim said the
\nEmil Salim Library would aid efforts to conserve the environment by
\nproviding people with vital and necessary information.<\/p>\n
\"Efforts at mending the current environmental conditions can
\nbe sped up if each element of society gains awareness and plays
\nan active role, which requires the availability of information,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Named in honor of the first environmental minister, Emil
\nSalim, branches of the library will also be established in the
\nBali capital Denpasar, the South Sulawesi capital Makassar and
\nthe capital of Riau, Pekanbaru.<\/p>\n
A deputy in the Office of the State Minister for the
\nEnvironment, Masnellyarti Hilman, said Emil was being recognized
\nfor his dedicated and endless work for the environment.<\/p>\n
Emil heads the Kehati Foundation, a non-governmental
\norganization focused on environmental conservation.<\/p>\n
The library has a collection of more than 10,000 books,
\ndocuments and articles from the media. It also is equipped with
\nan audiovisual room with a collection of more than 500 movies and
\nCDs.<\/p>\n
Created with a US$3 million soft loan from the Asian
\nDevelopment Bank, the library also has a mobile library and a
\nwebsite at www.perpustakaan.menlh.go.id.<\/p>\n
During the official opening, Emil expressed his appreciation
\nat having the library named after him.<\/p>\n
\"I am happy because I finally found a place where I can put
\nall the books and theses that have been piling up at my house. My
\nwife grumbles a lot about those books,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Emil became the first minister of the environment in 1978, a
\nposition he held for 15 years.<\/p>",
