Leuser Park woodland endangered<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Ministry of Forestry will not extend permits
\nfor three forest concessionaires in Leuser National Park (TNL),
\nAceh, because it says their activities endanger the environment,
\nAntara reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
The news agency said three companies, which were not named,
\nhave concessions over 297,000 hectares of forest in the east and
\nsoutheast of the park.<\/p>\n
They have operated between 17 years and 18 years and their
\npermits will expire within two or three years.<\/p>\n
\"The decision was taken after studying their performance,\"
\nMinister of Forestry Djamaludin Suryohadikusumo said Friday.<\/p>\n
The concessionaires failed to meet their obligations,
\nincluding on safety standards, Djamaludin said, adding that the
\nministry also took into consideration a report from the Leuser
\nInternational Foundation.<\/p>\n
The concession holders were informed of the decision on July
\n18, he said.<\/p>\n
Forests cover 74.5 percent, or 4.13 million hectares of Aceh
\nprovince. They comprise preserved forests, timber estates and
\nconservation forests.<\/p>\n
There are currently 20 forest concessions in areas covering
\n1.76 million hectares in Aceh. Some 147 companies hold
\nexploitation rights for 853,844 hectares of forests. (08)<\/p>",
