With its new antiterrorism regulations, Indonesia has vowed to
\nbe tougher against all kinds of terror. President Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri confirmed Indonesia's stance against terrorism at
\nthe APEC meeting in Mexico last week.<\/p>\n
At home Coordinating Minister for Political and Security
\nAffairs Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is in charge of coordinating the
\neffort to deal with terror-related affairs. Now that several
\npeople have been detained in terror-related cases, there is no
\nreason for other countries to question Indonesia's determination
\nin crushing terrorism. But it is obvious that Indonesia's
\nwillingness to deal with terrorism relates to the policies of
\nother countries, which have frequently urged Indonesia to be more
\naggressive on terrorism.<\/p>\n
The government's moves were done in hopes of mending the
\ntourist industry and to encourage investors to return -- in
\nshort, more revenue.<\/p>\n
It will take time for these measures to bear fruit. Other
\ncountries' pressures against Indonesia, such as their ban on
\ntheir citizens from visiting Indonesia, plays a significant role
\nin the process of our economic recovery.<\/p>\n
The recent calamity and foreign pressures against the country
\nshould have made all layers of society united. With more
\nconfidence, we must be able to stand up to rebuild the country.
\nWe should not beg other countries to withdraw their travel bans
\n(for their citizens). Let's release ourselves from our dependence
\non other countries and boost domestic solidarity.<\/p>\n
