Let Nike rest in peace: PWI council<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Honor Council of the Association of
\nIndonesian Journalists (PWI) criticized the national media
\nyesterday for going overboard in their coverage of the death of
\nTV starlet Nike Ardila to the point of sensationalism.<\/p>\n
The council, the profession's watchdog, said in a statement
\nthat media coverage of Nike's death \"has been blown out of
\nproportion, bordering on sensationalism, at the expense of
\nrespecting the privacy of a person,\" Antara reported.<\/p>\n
\"To compound matters, the person concerned is dead and is
\ntherefore unable to defend herself,\" said the statement, which
\nwas signed by council chairman Syamsul Basri.<\/p>\n
Nike was at the peak of her career when she died in a car
\naccident in Bandung last month. At 19, she was one of Indonesia's
\nmost sought after actresses, starring in several of the
\nincreasingly popular \"telenovellas\". She began her rise to
\nstardom in singing and modeling.<\/p>\n
Her untimely death -- she died on a Sunday morning after an
\nall night party -- has generated speculations in the press about
\nthe kind of lifestyle she was leading. Some reports even drew a
\nlink between her death and the increasing incidence of drug abuse
\namong Indonesia's young elite.<\/p>\n
Some magazines have run cover stories on her death.<\/p>\n
The PWI Honor Council said journalists should show
\nprofessionalism in handling stories like Nike's death because
\notherwise the integrity of the profession in the eyes of the
\npublic could be affected.<\/p>\n
The council also said it had given a warning to a local
\npublication that had repeatedly published pictures of scantily
\ndressed women, during the Moslem holy month of Ramadhan, which
\ncould offend readers' sense of modesty.<\/p>\n
The council appealed to the local press not to resort to
\npublishing pictures of semi-naked women for the purpose of
\nboosting their readerships. (emb)<\/p>",
