We have to admit that the recent riot which started in
\nSitubondo, followed by unrest in Tasikmalaya, Senggau Ledo (West
\nKalimantan), Tanah Abang and Rangkasdengklok are, in fact,
\nlessons for us and especially for the government.<\/p>\n
The Tanah Abang incident, for instance, occurred because
\nsecurity people overacted when they were doing their job. While
\non the other hand, long-time traders refused to tolerate this
\nkind of treatment. This is the reason why the incident happened.<\/p>\n
I am very concerned with the present situation. Especially
\nsince an important democratic event is to take place in a few
\nmonths. We should follow public development carefully.<\/p>\n
And, of course, to quote the authorities, we should not get
\ncarried away by issues of separatism or issues that are clearly a
\nthreat to the nation's unity.<\/p>\n
I am of the opinion that the riots erupted because of, among
\nother things, the authorities attitude, which lacked wisdom in
\nhumane matters. They are often too harsh in their treatment, or,
\nwhen they have to solve problems.<\/p>\n
Let us turn to ourselves and draw a lesson from these
\noccurrences.<\/p>\n
We hope that these incidents do not occur again in future. Let
\nit not happen in the holy month of Ramadhan. We hope that people
\nwill forgive one another.<\/p>\n
