The commemoration of International Women\u2019s Day (IWD) represents a\ncrucial moment for raising awareness among all citizens about the\nimportance of equality and justice for women.<\/p>\n
\u201cCommitment to women\u2019s justice and equality cannot be fully realised\nwithout support from all parties and policies that have structural\nimpact on society,\u201d said Deputy Chair of the People\u2019s Consultative\nAssembly Lestari Moerdijat in a written statement on Sunday, 8 March,\nmarking International Women\u2019s Day commemorated annually on 8 March.<\/p>\n
The theme for the 2026 IWD commemoration is \u201cGive To Gain,\u201d which\nemphasises the power of collaboration, generosity, and social investment\nto create gender equality.<\/p>\n
According to Lestari, marking IWD during the month of Ramadan is\nparticularly timely. The spirit of this year\u2019s IWD and Ramadan align in\npromoting values of empathy, justice, and social care.<\/p>\n
These values, according to Rerie\u2014Lestari\u2019s common nickname\u2014serve as\nan important reminder that the struggle to achieve gender equality is\nnot solely the government\u2019s responsibility, but also that of all\nsocietal elements.<\/p>\n
Rerie assessed that the IWD commemoration is not merely a\ncelebration, but also a reflection on the various challenges women\ncontinue to face across different sectors of life, ranging from the\neconomy and politics to protection from violence.<\/p>\n
The Global Gender Gap Report 2025 released by the World Economic\nForum recorded Indonesia\u2019s gender gap score at 0.692, placing Indonesia\nat rank 97 out of 148 countries.<\/p>\n
Additionally, Rerie noted, data from the 2024 National Survey on\nWomen\u2019s Life Experiences (SPHPN) showed that 1 in 4 women aged 15-64 in\nIndonesia have experienced physical or sexual violence at some point in\ntheir lives.<\/p>\n
These findings, clarified Rerie, who is also a member of Commission X\nof the House of Representatives, demonstrate that gender equality and\nprotection for women remain crucial issues and ongoing challenges for\nboth government and society.<\/p>\n
The member of NasDem Party\u2019s High Council hopes that this year\u2019s IWD\ncommemoration can strengthen collective awareness among citizens to\naccelerate the realisation of justice and equal opportunities for\nIndonesian women.<\/p>\n
Moerdijat also encouraged collaboration between the Ministry of\nHealth and Ministry of Education and Culture to conduct mental health\nscreening for students to address threats to youth mental wellbeing, and\nemphasised the importance of expanding women\u2019s participation in STEM\nfields as a strategy to increase innovation, competitiveness, and human\nresource development in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
She further assessed that the government\u2019s policy to delay access to\ndigital accounts, including social media, for children under 16 years of\nage is an important step, stressing that commitment from all parties is\nneeded to realise better efforts in the prevention and management of\nmental health issues in children and adolescents.
