        "content": "<p>JAKARTA \u2014 The Messenger of Allah had various sources of income, which\nhe distributed to his family, the community and the state. Although he\nwas generous, the Prophet also taught people how to control their\nspending when using their wealth.<\/p>\n<p>In his book <em>The Prophet\u2019s Wealth<\/em>, Abdul Fattah As-Samman\nexplains several ways the Prophet controlled expenditure. For example,\nMuhammad exercised restraint when his wives asked for increased\nallowances, as described in the verses concerning the instruction to\nchoose. He also controlled spending when his daughter once asked him to\nbuy her a servant.<\/p>\n<p>The Prophet\u2019s advice on frugality in household matters was another\nway in which he taught the management of wealth. Allah explains why he\ndid not grant his wives\u2019 requests for increased allowances in verses\n28\u201329 of Surah Al-Ahzab.<\/p>\n<p>The verses say: \u201cO Prophet! Say to your wives, \u2018If you desire the\nlife of this world and its adornment, then come, and I will provide for\nyou and release you in a gracious manner. But if you desire Allah and\nHis Messenger and the abode of the Hereafter, then indeed Allah has\nprepared a great reward for those of you who do good.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, there are three points that need to be understood when\ninterpreting the evidence above.<\/p>",
