Lessons from Buleleng<\/p>\n
Two people were killed in Buleleng subdistrict, in the north
\nof Bali following a bloody clash between supporters of the Bali
\nchapters of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-
\nPerjuangan) and Golkar Party.<\/p>\n
Other people were injured and a number of cars were set ablaze
\nduring the incident, which occurred on the eve of the
\ncommemoration of Youth Pledge Day on Oct. 28.<\/p>\n
Young Indonesian intellectuals from different faiths, tribes
\nand languages vowed on Oct 28, 1928 to have one country, one
\nnation and one language.<\/p>\n
Surprised leaders of the two political parties in Jakarta have
\nexpressed regret over the conflict, saying they had no grudge
\nagainst each other.<\/p>\n
The Buleleng clash highlights once again the tendency for many
\nof this nation's people to use violence, rather than dialog, to
\naddress problems.<\/p>\n
The clash could be seen as a warning that there is a problem
\namong political parties which needs to be solved, otherwise more
\nwidespread conflicts will occur during the 2004 general election
\ncampaign.<\/p>\n
It is time for the people to take the example set by those
\nvisionary Indonesians in 1928, when they were able to settle
\ntheir conflicts peacefully.<\/p>\n
What would have happened if people from different backgrounds
\nat that time used violence against each other to settle their
\nproblems?<\/p>\n
In general, Indonesia's young pioneers in 1928 were not
\nwealthy but were rich in mission and vision.<\/p>\n
Such people are desperately needed if this country hopes to
\nprogress in the future.<\/p>\n
