Lentera International School closed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Lentera International School in Cibubur, a
\nJakarta suburb, was closed last week, said chairman of the school
\nboard Keith Cameron.<\/p>\n
\"The coup de grace was delivered Feb. 2,\" said Cameron in a
\nstatement made available to The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
According to Cameron, problems with the school's
\nadministration and business affairs began at the end of 1994.<\/p>\n
A change in school principles and a loss of more than 20
\nstudents, 50 teachers and support staff forced the closure, added
\nseveral sources who asked not to be identified.<\/p>\n
Reports of corruption and managerial problems were also cited
\nas reasons, a former teacher at the school told the Post over the
\nweekend.<\/p>\n
\"The school owes money all over the place -- to teachers and
\nstaff members, even school bus payments,\" said the former
\nteacher.<\/p>\n
Neither Cameron nor Tony Holligan, the school's latest
\nprincipal, were available for comment.<\/p>\n
Lentera was founded four years ago primarily for English-
\nspeaking students with learning disabilities.<\/p>\n
Last October, teachers and staff members asked the Parents and
\nTeachers Association to help find a solution, said one parent.<\/p>\n
The school's allegedly bankrupt state has caused many parents,
\nmostly expatriates, to feel restless and unsure of where to send
\ntheir kids, sources said.<\/p>\n
\"It appears that there's no personal accountability nor
\nresponsibility. It seems odd to me that some people have the guts
\nto claim personal assets when others lost theirs,\" lamented a
\nparent.<\/p>\n
