Lenteng Agung school wins contest for the disabled<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Students from the Lenteng Agung school, South
\nJakarta, came out winners in Saturday's sports competitions for
\nthe disabled, which were held in Kuningan, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Asih Budi II junior school, Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, won
\nsecond prize, and another school, Budi Daya, came third.<\/p>\n
The competitions were comprised of athletics, mass gymnastics
\nand long-distance walking for families.<\/p>\n
The one-day event, especially for those with mental
\ndisabilities, was organized by the Special Olympics Foundation of
\nIndonesia. The foundation arranges competitions for talent
\nscouting aimed for international competitions.<\/p>\n
Mustara Musa, a coach, said the foundation is now preparing to
\nsend athletes to Singapore's National Games, to which Indonesia
\nis also invited. The games, to take place in May, include
\ncompetitions for the disabled, Mustara said.<\/p>\n
Another coach, former badminton champion Minarni Soedaryanto,
\nsaid sports and competitions are very important to increase self-
\nconfidence of the disabled.<\/p>\n
\"But parents need to be constantly urged to support their
\nchildren\" who want to join sports, she said.<\/p>\n
Mustara said children tend to shed dependence on family
\nmembers when they participate in sports. Sportsmanship is high
\namong athletes with mental disabilities, he said.<\/p>\n
\"They are very disappointed when they lose, but are happy for
\ntheir winning competitors,\" Mustara said.<\/p>\n
The event in Kuningan was also an opportunity for fun, even
\nfor participants who had not exercised regularly.<\/p>\n
Sari, a participant in the family long-distance walk, said she
\nenjoyed the event.<\/p>\n
The competition was attended by Sri Sumarsih Surjadi
\nSoedirdja, the governor's wife, who is the foundation's patron.<\/p>\n
Saturday's contest was held to celebrate the 39th anniversary
\nof the Asih Budi Foundation, an organization focusing on the
\ndisabled. It was also held in conjunction with the International
\nDay for the Disabled, which falls on Dec. 5. (anr)<\/p>",
