Legislators told to forget holidays<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Speaker of the House of Representatives Akbar
\nTandjung told House committees deliberating bills on the
\npresidential election and the composition of the People's
\nConsultative Assembly, House and the regional representative
\ncouncils to forego their upcoming recess period in order to
\ndebate the drafts.<\/p>\n
"The committee must work during the recess," said Akbar, who
\nwas convicted of corruption and sentenced to three-years jail by
\nthe Central Jakarta District Court. He is free pending an appeal.<\/p>\n
Faction chairman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of
\nStruggle (PDI Perjuangan) Roy B.B. Janis concurred Thursday.<\/p>\n
The House is scheduled to go into recess from March 7 till
\nApril 25.<\/p>\n
Although it is uncommon for legislators to use the recess
\nperiod to work, the move would help speed up passage of the
\ncrucial bills.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a House steering committee (Bamus) failed on
\nThursday to discuss the formation of a team to deliberate a bill
\non a direct presidential election.<\/p>\n
Of the 76 committee members, only 37 showed up, prompting
\nlegislators to postpone the meeting until next Thursday. -- JP<\/p>",
