Legislators protest governor's project<\/p>\n
SEMARANG: The United Development Party faction in Central
\nJava's legislature have strongly protested Governor Soewardi's
\nplan to build a family welfare monument worth Rp 3.5 billion
\n(US$1.45 million)<\/p>\n
The monument is to be located at the birthplace of the family
\nwelfare program in Ungaran, 10 kilometers south of here.<\/p>\n
Faction chairman Thoyfoer said there were far more pressing
\npriorities like the development of high-quality human resources
\nto meet global competition.<\/p>\n
\"We do not see the need for such a flashy monument, \" Thoyfoer
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Thoyfoer told The Jakarta Post that many schools in Central
\nJava, from elementary to secondary level, required repairs and
\nupgrading as do many orphanages.<\/p>\n
He said the province's irrigation facilities, which are also
\ndamaged, required repairs to maintain agricultural activities.<\/p>\n
Central Java's deputy governor Hartono defended the decision
\nto establish the monument as a proper tribute to hail the
\nprovince's efforts in family welfare and to honor the town of
