Legislators' moral ills<\/p>\n

It is ironic that Speaker of the House of Representatives
\n(DPR) Akbar Tandjung received tight security protection from his
\n\"bodyguards\" some time ago, particularly as he was asked to
\ntestify in the case of misappropriation of non-budgetary funds
\nfrom the State Logistics Agency (Bulog).<\/p>\n
A sensible observation will show that the examination of this
\ncase is under the authority and responsibility of law enforcers.
\nI fully agree that the case should be thoroughly investigated in
\norder to purge the Functional Group (Golkar) Party of its
\ndefiling elements.<\/p>\n
Strangely, however, part of the people's representatives in
\nthe DPR have responded zealously by proposing the formation of a
\nspecial committee. Have they lost their sense of crisis, that
\nthey insist in dealing with the case that actually belongs in the
\ndomain of the Attorney General's Office (AGO)?<\/p>\n
Or, is it likely that some House members' passionate attempts
\nto establish the committee means a conspiracy to discredit Golkar
\nthrough the scandal of Buloggate II and further recommend
\nGolkar's dissolution as previously demanded but rejected by the
\nSupreme Court?<\/p>\n
Cases of alleged corruption or Bulog fund abuses and other
\nsuch cases have often involved high-ranking public officials.<\/p>\n
It is fresh in our mind that People's Consultative Assembly
\n(MPR) vice chairman Ginanjar Kartasasmita was examined by the AGO
\nand even had to remain in its custody. But none of the
\nlegislators tried to initiate the special committee.<\/p>\n
That is just the moral ills of our people's representatives
\nthat must first be overcome, because unless these flaws are
\neliminated, they will only act for personal or group interests
\nrather than for the public at large. We are now expecting Akbar
\nto show courage and speak the truth.<\/p>\n
