I take offense with Minister of Finance Mar'ie Muhammad's
\nemotional \"appeal\" at the House of Representatives asking
\njournalists to write and report more responsibly. His attitude is
\nshameful and proves that he is incapable of exercising self-
\ncontrol.<\/p>\n
I deny ever having said that the Minister of Finance
\nexplicitly threatened the press. However, any government \"appeal\"
\nor piece of advice is usually intended to prevent society from
\ndoing something. Essentially, government advice can be
\ninterpreted as a warning.<\/p>\n
This is evident from the way the government officials act
\ntoward the press: the revocation of magazines, the making of off-
\nthe-record statements, banning the publication of news reports,
\nand authorities issuing warnings not to release news reports.<\/p>\n
Such obstacles to the press are an attempt by the government
\nto deny press freedom. This also means a denial of openness and
\nis contrary to democracy.<\/p>\n
Law is above everything. So, if the press violates the law,
\nlet them face the law and not the powers that be.<\/p>\n
What I have been trying to achieve during my time as a
\nlegislator in this government is in line with my task and
\nfunction as a people's representative. Therefore, the Minister
\nneeds not have responded to my statement with such antipathy.<\/p>\n
